The easy way to grab an empty server (the console)
.
have you created a lobby and then invited friends and then have trouble getting a server ?
I found an easy solution tonight
in the options enable console
then press ~ (top left of keyboard, above the tab)
enter command OPENSERVERBROWSER and press enter
you can then find an empty server and join it and your friends can then join on you
you can see ping of servers as well
I find friends tab and history tab work, but not the other search tabs
Once in a server you can vote changes to campaign and difficulty (if you vote change on difficulty then check to level hasnt changed after each map change)

For the most part, I think it's easier to start a local server. The pings really aren't that bad when somebody hosts. On release night, my team tried to get on a dedicated server and we all had horrible pings. We finished off the map and decided to continue with one of us hosting.

Re: The easy way to grab an empty server (the console)

TG server appears to be there now
I suggest;- enable console
- open console ~
- type connect 70.87.55.28:27015
- thats loads the map
- the splash screen server graphics are not TG branded yet
- play games
- then latter ...
- open console ~
- type openserverbrowser
- goto history
- favorite TG server
- in future join through the browser
EDIT
@admins
just had something weird happen
zed was on our server and I joined on him and went into a lobby, could just be one-off thing or maybe not
could join server through browser though

Re: The easy way to grab an empty server (the console)
If you have a non-us keyboard you may have problems taking up the console. It's a bug.
So i read around and this worked for me.
go to steam -> My games and right click on L4D - choose properties.
Click on "set launch options" and type in "-console"
This will bring up console automatically as soon as the game starts. you can now type in "bind [key] to console".
I used F11 and it works even when i restart the game. awesome
