We need TG L4D Server Rules
Dear L4D Admins,
Now that this game gets more attention from TG and pubbies, I believe it is the time to establish official TG server rules for this game.
I say this, because I see many non-TG players on our server that do not follow the TG mentality and ethos.
First we should define and post the rules, second we have to add some text on the server banners to display the most important server rules.
I am bringing this issue to public, only to inform the community about the need of official TG L4D rules.
Thank you.Last edited by Rasta-GR; 01-15-2009 at 10:30 AM. Reason: Bad spelling

Re: We need TG L4D Server Rules
We had a discussion about this back in demo days and we came in to conclusion that we don't need any more rules than the TG ones.

Re: We need TG L4D Server Rules
I guess we can change the current MOTD to be a little more clear - that these are rules, not suggestions. Also - the dev team (need help!) is working on getting in-game announcements working... so every five minutes (or whatever) some text will appear in-game "reminding" people what's expected of them

Re: We need TG L4D Server Rules
The problem is that these people aren't joining the TG servers and being tards. Steam is just picking a random open server and going with it.

Re: We need TG L4D Server Rules
Yeah. I was hosting a game on the TG Advanced Versus server, but people were doing very un-TG things (let's leave it at that). I don't know what the solution is, I just know we need one.

Re: We need TG L4D Server Rules
Should we though, I mean leave it at that? This is a new game, I'm only on my second or third weekend - I don't even know what the rules are, besides what's in the MOTD. What constitutes un-TG things (I am not calling you out, or want you to write anything you don't want to, just picking this up).
For example, I smacked a witch in the head on VS last night, and it was bugging me all day - is that against the rules, or just not kosher? I saw someone do it on a pubby server, and have no idea why I did it, maybe a heat of the game thing. Is there a list somewhere of those things that are frowned upon in the game (sorry if there is a post here somewhere that covers that, but even if there is, it only helps those that come by the forums)?

Re: We need TG L4D Server Rules
The TG rules can be summed up entirely with two questions.
In the course of the game, if you ask yourself the following things, you are probably doing something frowned upon.
"Am I being a douchebag?"
"I wonder if this is fair."
Blocking survivors in with objects? See those two questions
Exploiting things to avoid crescendo events? See those two questions
Shooting your team mate in the back of the head over and over? See those two questions, then pitch head first into traffic.

Re: We need TG L4D Server Rules
I hear you, and I'm coming from games that have a list of actual rules though. I get the whole TK thing, that's too easy.
This game plays differently, and I'm just going with this out loud: as infected I'm puking on survs to cause a horde to go rip their flesh out; if I smack a witch as infected the same thing happens. Maybe I'm just stuck on this example, I can't think of many more as I haven't spent enough time in the game - maybe that's why no real 'rules' are needed except for the high level ones listed above.

Re: We need TG L4D Server Rules
They fixed you being able to set the witch on the survivors. But yeah, I'd think setting the witch on survivors who'd intentionally avoided her to be pretty lame.
It's mostly all common sense. If there's thought in your mind that says "Hm, I bet that guy would kick me in the face if I do ___________", then I reiterate, err on the side of caution.

Re: We need TG L4D Server Rules
Valve, unlike EA, does a pretty good job of patching their titles to remove the cheesy aspects. (sometimes of course replacing one cheesy thing with another) Therefore the general rules that go with any game hosted by TG should suffice. (respect others, dont be a douche, play as a team)
About the witch, I personally don't see anything wrong with agitating her as infected, she is part of the challenge and just something for the survivors to deal with.

Re: We need TG L4D Server Rules
I'm in agreement with morganan, the witch is an obstacle to overcome and an easy one at that. I actually think it's kind of inthe TG spirit if you move her to a more advantageous spot as it requires teamwork and coordination and just enough self-sacrifice ( she kills you when you move her)

well valve has removed the ability to move her, so it does not matter now
