SDK & matchmaker news
http://www.l4d.com/blog/post.php?id=2390
In a recent update for L4D on the PC, we provided the option for players to choose between starting a game on an Official server or the Best Available. This is just the first step in giving players control over what servers they play on and the type of experience they have.
This is part of the L4D SDK rollout, which is currently in a closed beta and will be released shortly after the launch of the L4D Survival Pack.
To support the SDK, we are extending the matchmaking system to allow for third party campaigns. We will be adding extra features so players will be able to find dedicated servers running the campaigns they have installed. They will also be able to see friends playing third party campaigns, and be directed to download them as necessary. Another major feature we are planning to add to the matchmaking system at a future date is team-based Versus matching. This will allow two teams of four to locate each other and compete in a Versus match.
We are also revamping our player matching based on skill level. Currently the system tries to match people with the same skill level and best pings together. We will be revisiting this system to tweak it based on data we have collected.

I was hoping for the SDK before that... But they don't want the competition in the mapping filed.. Either way.. I like the matchmaking and lobby stuff...sounds great. I like the idea where it can direct you to get the maps etc..

Re: SDK & matchmaker news
with the implementation of SDK coming soon, I have a question for developers:
Will it ever be possible to allow Xbox and PC players to play together? I only ask because my brother and best friend prefer the Xbox version and I am itching to show them how much better a PC player can be at the same game ><;;

will it ever be possible? Certainly, but I doubt valve will go out of it's way to do something like this.

Re: SDK & matchmaker news
yeah, I cant beleive in a day and age where the price of building a decent gaming system vs buying a pre built system are comprabable when you add in the added $300 to account for a PS2 or Xbox 360 that people would still play on a console ..very few console games are not released on the PC and almost none cant be ported over..so there really is no good reason to play on consoles and not PC IMO

Re: SDK & matchmaker news
My tendency is actually to not bother with consoles most of the time unless it is something exclusive or something that doesn't translate into a PC game well without extra peripherals (Street Fighter).
As for my original question, I was just wondering if it would be possible for a server to be set up so that it COULD accept both kinds of traffic from our end? I know nothing of the technical aspects of that sort of thing, but I imagine certain factors might render it impossible unless you actually worked at Valve. I am just looking for a yes or no as to whether or not this would be a fix from a remote location or if it would require changes to the physical server infrastructure.

Re: SDK & matchmaker news
I guess it depends on how much different the game architecture is between the systems? If the game ended up having some fundamental changes to allow for play on the console, then the answer is probably no. But who knows.
I am glad to see this, but I still hope that once you have your group set up, you could just click on a favorites place and jump to that server as a group. Having to do the search key is annoying. I have yet to do it correctly, so I always have someone else do it. I know this isn't the sort of game where people join as it goes along (like counterstrike battlefield, etc), but why can't the leader select a specific server from the favorites list?"Sympathy means a lot, coming from Kulmar. I didn't think it was possible.
Good luck getting rid of your disease. If you're infected, though, stay away--I can't afford to be a zombie right now.

Re: SDK & matchmaker news
Both M$ and Valve would have to make changes to their server infrastructure. Valve wants people playing their games online to be tied to their network, and M$ wants the same thing from it's XboxLive system. M$ wouldn't want their XboxLive players having to use steam anymore then Valve would want it's steam users to have to use WindowsLive.
As it stands right now, the only way you can prove to him that mouse+keyboard>controller would be to go to a lan center and have him use his xbox controller on a pc and tear him apart.

Re: SDK & matchmaker news
This reminds me of all the flame wars regarding Halo players on Xbox vs Halo players on PC. Obviously the PC wins because its the only way you can jump, crouch, shoot, strafe, and move all at the same time while doing your taxes.
