SOP: Looking for a game? Join our steam-group chat room!
The problem with the lobby/server system in L4D is that you only have access to players on your friends-list. Fortunately, the TG-L4D steamgroup has over 650 members! To help take advantage of this, the L4D admin team would like to request people form games by joining the steamgroup chat room!
(If you haven't yet, click here to join the steamgroup)
To do this, simply go to the bottom of your friends list:... or via the TG-L4D page as shown below:

Instead of inviting friends to a lobby, start by inviting them to the group chat:
Once you have enough people for a game, have someone start a lobby or join the server (either via main menu/console command/server browser) and everyone else can follow them in:

Is this still the SOP, or is this game kind of dead here at TG. I have not seen any action in the group chat since i started trying to play left 4 dead 2. Or while i was playing left 4 dead for that matter.

Chat room use quickly died out, despite being SOP.
A good idea is to friend up with any TG guys you can find (there's a STEAM username list, somewhere in the forums...) and just monitor their games.

Re: SOP: Looking for a game? Join our steam-group chat room!
The problem is chat rooms with Steam in general. If everyone in the group automatically was placed into the chat room in stealth (aka in the background), chats would be used so much more. But the extra hassle of having to join the chatroom everytime you start Steam, makes it a pain really.
To this reason, is why virtually all steam groups with the exception of a handful (even official ones with tens of thousands of people), have empty chatrooms.
Not that you asked, but I figured I'd say it here anyways. The TG L4D group has a pretty healthy population in it (just look at the numbers of people, online, and playing games). I know we can easily get 16 people to join in on the L4D2 fun by pinging the group when events are setup to go on a regular basis without any admin intervention. Sure we aren't L4D Japan that has some 15,000 players and about 50 active servers, but you get the picture.
I have given some thought as to motivating people to actually join the chatroom, but then it doesn't make sense once the Teamspeak 3 server goes gold, and when group announcements will serve as a better way of alerting people of when stuff will be happening.
For now, many people simply start up games and can generally find enough people to invite more people and get a FO (friends only) game going within a reasonable (for L4D anyways) time.
One thing to remember about L4D is that people generally don't have the game started unless interest is generated around getting a game going. With all the rage quitting and bad people (like myself) out there, its almost as if its better to not play L4D unless you have someone else to share that special gaming experience with.
And with that said, currently Valve has banned me from...doing stuff in Steam Community. So until then, I actually don't have control of the group (needless to say I could just ask Kebab to do stuff of course).
That does make me wonder though, the game has been out only for what, a month and 2 weeks? I had put up these polls to gauge activity on when we need to organize to keep the interest alive. Are people burning out on the game? Or are we in need of getting organized now?

Re: SOP: Looking for a game? Join our steam-group chat room!
Well, a few ideas I had going around with making it easier to gather...
1) All members have limited moderator powers in group, allowing them to post in the event or announcement section about a game they are going to be starting soon. Not sure if this one is possible with steamgroup admin controls.
2) Be in TG's L4D2 server (Only effective for people who are already in game, which means that people like myself who don't sit inside L4D2 won't know about anyone not on friendslist that is in the server).
3) This one might have promise: Using the TS L4D lobby as a lobby for players looking for a game. The only downside I can see is that players in the steamgroup aren't all TG members, and might not have the TS info, so they ignore the SOP.
IMO, we need organization. I haven't played a game for quite a while until Kebab messaged me about an Expert campaign. And even then, I got stuck with 3 players in Europe, and me being in America I had an outrageous ping that made me shoot everyone as they warped in front of me and warp in front of others to get myself shot.
I'm almost always up for an Expert campaign, but I just haven't gotten much luck!

Re: SOP: Looking for a game? Join our steam-group chat room!
1. This is possible. I've seen it abused however. Ill have to look into how much control we have over this because the alternative may be promoting more people to moderator status for announcements.
2. The problem is most people dont sit inside l4d2, and the server browser / type of game joining l4d utilizes doesnt work like it does for TF2. So I don't think this is going to work.
3. Teamspeak is good, but Im not sure how many people will adopt or opt to use TS. Its more of a laziness and yet another application we need opened for something we play once/twice a day or not everyday.
I agree, we do need more organization. Its just a matter of time until announcements for regular L4D2 games start occurring on a weekly basis.
