As there are so many I usually just place explosion barrel right next to a flame can near critical location so you are sure to hit atleast one of them when shooting that direction.
Other ones are placed around possible escape routes or places where you might need to get ammo and need fast way to get rid of zombies hitting you (after all burning survivor isn't necessarily dead survivor)

Good way to get them used might be to place them near your first stand off ground, then move on and set the place on fire when you run out of ammo etc.

Tried to use against tanks or save them for later, but they tend to get shot at when zombies start swarming

Fuel is good for the common infected, you want to use it to block the main walkway to your location.

You want to use propaine to stun the tank for few seconds or clear the way to ammo cahce when there's a lot of infected.
Oxygen tank has fuse, so unlike propaine it'll whistle at first and then blow up. Uses are the same as for propaine, but you can get close to it and shoot it and run away in time.

What you don't want to do is to pile stuff close together (see Attachment one) and throw propaine too close to those piles (see result in Attachment two).

We were playing one of the hospital-capters. (Intensive care where you wait for the elevator - which never arrives lol) And we didn't have those goodies. We were sitting on a bed close together. If a tank arrives all of use empty theire shotgun into him. Amo was just infront of the bed.

And we managed to get to 10 min +

So I'm not that sure if those goodies are THAT usefull. Or if they are that important ...

They are like pipebombs and molotovs. Only way to use them is to shoot them or set them on fire.
They are very useful if used correctly.

Re: Best way to use throwables in survivor mode ?

We setup a strat to chain some propane to blow up a gas tank that would plug the a alley way. The propane tanks blew up and was far enough away to delay the next propane tank, which then blew a gas tank (delayed) around a corner, which then lit up a tank that would have to climb over a fence around this corner, thereby dying because tanks + pool of fire = intense fire damage (rather than burning damage).

lol that is great avs.

I've found that stacking them for later === early death 100% of the time. It is much better to distribute them at strategic points (around ammo) and then use them when appropriate.

When we go on top in "last stand" map we make sure we place it all around ammo spot number 2 (the one not in spawn) and we throw a propane tank and shoot it and throws a fuel tank right under to make sure they wont climb op and we have 2 fuel tanks with os so we can place them out.
