Re: meele weapons

My own tests, but don't quote me on them for I am not 100% with them till I get facts:

Night stick:
Weak. A lot of them will be found in the demo for every/most/some armored uncommon infected carry them.
It took me two hits to kill common infected with it. Might have been the low FPS I was having though (I was playing on old computer).
EDIT: After playing with it on computer that actually runs L4D2 well, nightstick kills common infected with one hit. It doesn't dismember zombies though, thus it appears to be very weak. I don't like it and tend to ditch it when I find other melee weapons.
It's not build for killing either, more like to stun and hurt baddies.

Machete:
Strong and fast. Kills common infected fast. I like it.
I'd say it's balanced with damage and speed.

Guitar:
Instantly kills its target common infected and pushes away or kills others near the target.
Awesome way to play the zombies out.

Frying pan:
Strong weapon. Did 355 damage with one hit.
Viper and Matt where there to witness the manic giggle I let out when I hit a witch with it after saying "back to the kitchen!".

Yes. You can use all the melee weapons. All of them. Even the pre-order exclusive baseball bat.

Only but is that you can only find it in the game if you play with people who have pre-ordered.

While I'm not sure of damage specs, it will work good as a backup rather than a primary weapon.

Melee, bash, and you'll be on your way for sure.

I think it's possible to get a 'headshot' (as in, extra damage is applied) with melee, and doing so with the night stick should do the trick.

I dunno, the other night, I was in a vs match on CC, and the tank had already downed the other 3 survivors and closed on me while I was pinned in the corner near the boxes up to the minigun platform by a boomer horde. Tough times to be living in, right?

Well just before the tank managed to take his first swing at me, I cleared the last of the horde away with a mighty melee shunt, jumped backwards and found myself on one of the boxes. The tanks fist came whistling in and all my dead buddies were shouting in my ears while typing the obligatory gg's n stuff, when I leapt forward and ON the tanks head! I was only trying to jink the punch, but I ended up tap-dancing on the head of a flaming tank for a couple of seconds.

I can only assume the tank player was as stunned as I was, because he spun around, couldn't see me and then just stood there, affording me the time to empty my auto-shotty (almost LITERALLY point-blank. If ONLY I'd crouched too, lol) into the top of his shiny burning head. He crumpled, majestically, to the ground, I helped up the 1 remaining survivor (he was near the van, which chose that particular moment to open its doors) and away we rode. I guess the other infected players couldn't bring themselves to attack in the intervening seconds, or they were laughing their butts off/questioning their interpretation of what they just saw like my team was.

The only downer was that I didn't have Fraps installed, or it'd be up there on the interweb for all to marvel at/flame.

Thread hijack over, your normal service has been resumed.

Re: meele weapons

From what I've played of the demo so far I don't really like the melee weapons. Pistols still have infinite ammo and normal bashing still kills infected as far as I know. I mean it is a LOT of fun bashing infected skulls in with the guitar, but I would rather just shoot them from a distance with duel pistols.

What I was hoping for in L4D2 was that bashing with your gun or pistol wouldn't do any damage to the infected and the melee weapons be the only ones that could kill infected in melee combat. That would have made picking up a melee weapon more of a strategic choice in my opinion.

*shrug* Probably just need to play more, get a feel for them, and understand their strategic value more fully.

Re: meele weapons

My favorite demo weapon is by far the machete. Nardini, Google, Axis and me played the demo yesterday and I saved all three of them with nothing but a machete. Granted the reason they had to be saved was because google went down, nardini went to save him, and axis threw a pipe bomb right next to them just before going down himself. After that it was Hack n' Slash Ferris to the rescue.

Well, bash does kill but it takes about, what, 4 hits? Whereas nearly all melee can kill in 1.

In my opinion, it's most definitely useful in a horde scenario (back up to a corner/another survivor, swing when you've got a couple in your view). However, this is not necessarily any better than a gun, it makes a good substitute and doesn't use up any ammo.

However, my by far most favorite place to use it is in the what I like to call Push Crescendos, where you've got to push through the horde to stop the crescendo (like the fenced area near the end of demo level 2); having one person with melee up front will give a lot of space for those behind to pick off any that get past him and that survivor will help clear the path and push forward. Doing this prevents most damage to the survivors in back, and if the front-man is good at melee and moving around infected attacks, he can get through without a scratch.

They have their uses, but it's personal preference of course; if you so desire to keep your boomstick at hand rather than a blade, that's a choice that only you can make.

Re: meele weapons

Melee weapon is good for situations when you are out of ammo or low on ammo and you got to kill infected in short or medium range. At long range you are better off with pistol.

Also if you got shotgun, you might want to have pistol with that or let your buddies take care of the smokers from far away.
