Re: Global Agenda
I think MrJengles and Greyed have both hit on key points... in my my view our ideas of online FPS and MMOs appears to be evolving. And the gaming industry is exploring new concepts to maximize the kind of playing environment various gamers are looking for. This may include instances with smaller numbers for fast-paced game play, as well as persistent worlds and capturable territories for the feel of a grand scale conflict.
GA is an ambitious under taking, and I hope it succeeds because it'll will open the door to new genres of gaming, and break the traditional molds.
I look forward to the TG analysis of all aspects of GA's gaming (both MMO and FPS). The forums may need to also evolve to combine what has previously been distinct types of gaming.

Re: Global Agenda
So this is sort of a fake mmo? Since If i read well less then 64 (current usual max) can play in a gameworld at the same time. What a disappointment. Where is that microsoft software that is going to improve online gaming code to allow for more players!
Ahh what a pity. FPS players don't want to level up imo. I hate the whole leveling up mechanic. If they only could complete microsoft's project which entailed roughly implementing a level of detail (LOD) for keeping track of other players with an adapted accuracy; low accuracy (and bandwith) for people on the other side of the map, high accuracy for those that are about to shoot you. Similar to LOD in textures really. If only...
The next big thing in multiplayer gaming/fps and even PC gaming in general is going to be getting past the 64player bandwith bottleneck all games are on now (don't even start about titles developed for kiddieconsoles).
I was hoping from the thread that global conflict might offer this revolution, patience....What it's like to play online games as a grown-up:http://s3.amazonaws.com/theoatmeal-i...e_gaming/1.jpg

Re: Global Agenda
Er, seriously? We're talking about why GA isn't an MMO by comparing it to FPS games, from 2001 and 2003, which have hundreds of players on each side and you say we're stuck on a 64 player limit? We're almost a decade past that.
And I don't think FPS players dislike levelling up. BF2 and BF2142 both employ that mechanic through the unlocks. Several popular mods to CS (the original, not source) employed it. Both PS and WWIIOL employed it. The difference between FPS "levels" and traditional RPG "levels" is that being higher level in an RPG means you're more specialized and should win against someone of a far lower level whereas in an FPS it means you're able to do more but doesn't mean you should be neigh invincible against those of a lower level."...the rules aren't there to enumerate what is always correct but what is always wrong..."

Re: Global Agenda
Exactly what Greyed said. FPS's can easily get monotonous if you play them enough... even something as simple as the achievements in the Battlefield series made them more interesting. Not just because it's something to do, and to aim for, but because it helps level up! The leveling then increases what you can do in the game, though you could get there without any achievements if you simply played enough. Equating to the more you played the game, the more you got out of it. That's something which FPS's without levels miss out on, especially since they are rarely Pay to Play. And Battlefield managed to make itself rather succesful, going down the leveling road was obviously a good decision.
Global Agenda is even more interesting for having a leveling aspect, that both unlocks more skills and devices, and makes you slightly more powerful - not so much that you can pwn someone by being a few levels higher, but enough so that you do feel more powerful and certainly improved. On top of that, it IS pay to play, if you WANT to, so there will be more content. If not, you can even buy it like any other FPS - AND still level up.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a huge FPS, with infantry, vehicles, air targets and whatnot all over the place. I think every FPSer wants more interaction like that because in real life vast distances and large numbers of soldiers fight, so it's more realistic. As well as the sense of achievement when you win something that large. Or even just for the chance to shoot more people.
The fact is, the problems with making a top notch FPS game with that many players still remain. You can't fault every game currently being produced for not being like that yet. The only real difference to modern games is GA has gone in almost the opposite direction and lowered the match population. However, they are taking the game in a new direction, one focusing on tactics and teamwork from the start, with fast paced combat (similar to TF2), classes and cohesive teamwork between them (similar to TF2 and BF2142), very nice visual graphics, linked matches (so that some battles can effect others), revisiting an overal territory system (as seen in PS, which became very successful) as well as combining the replayability of MMOs, with the action of an FPS.
That's the real dream for why people want an MMOFPS amalgamation: to blend the strengths of both genres, and in doing so, eliminating eachothers weakness'. As far as I see it, GA is making a brilliant attempt at this - by mixing succesful ideas/projects from multiple games, and adding in their own flavour and ideas along the way. Whether it succeeds, is still in question... but I still think it could interest TG quite a bit. We shall see.
*Unreal Engine 3, nothing very new - but then again, it's worked wonders for plenty of other games, and must be good to be used so much.Last edited by MrJengles; 11-18-2009 at 05:13 AM.

Re: Global Agenda
Just started playing this tonight, not too bad but lots of lag (not sure if this is just on my side) doesnt seem to be a lot in it so far, shoot something here, move something there, but I'm still low level and most the modes are still locked.
Anyone else playing?
My name: Adept a skilled or proficient person Abyss a deep, immeasurable space, gulf, or cavity

Re: Global Agenda
I've been in big battles in WW2OL, there were rarely that many folks on screen (plus how primitive the graphics had to be for their engine to sustain the numbers active in the world).
Anyway... I'm active. It's fun, there's a ton of teamwork required. A bad team equals an incredibly easy win for even a slightly-organized team. I can't wait to see how an Agency (in-game clan/team/whatever) with members active on VOIP will supercharge the matches.

Re: Global Agenda
Playing through the levels is worth it, as you need to unlock the content gradually to experience it all. Harder PvE difficulties, for example, are much more challenging. Leveling also doesn't take as long as most MMOs, so you won't need to play for ages just to get more out the game. On top of that, there's still a bit more content (more AvA stuff) being released that Betas havn't seen, as far as I know.
As to lag... the game is still testing, and recently had an influx of thousands of people due to the pre-order benefit, so HiRez are fixing any issues with large numbers of people that any MMO would see at this stage. Not to mention they got some brand new hardware that has needed to be optimised. So there'll be a good improvement by the end of the month.
That said, the majority have found it fine overall, even when they switched the servers to the UK for a while.
Indeed. The AvA is finally playable, so I've had the chance to play some matches while grouped with a few agencies that worked quite well together. The fact that teamwork makes such a big difference in regular matches was great... but having an entire team of people who game together, practice together etc. has been awesome
Unfortunately I have had computer trouble; and this one probably won't run GA. For when I get to play again, my in-game name is Baharroth.

Re: Global Agenda
In my opinion, Fallen Earth is better, FE just doesn't have as good of graphics or animations, but the core gameplay is solid...

Re: Global Agenda
Global Agenda has a new launch trailer and no more Non-Disclosure Act! Footage is trickling onto YouTube, and reviews should be on the way.
On to more important matters... did HiRez use my character in the trailer?
