Discussion: Natural Selection / Natural Selection - General Discussion - Balance Needs Fixing - Balance if there is 10 or more people in the ready room, kicks about everyone
Balance if there is 10 or more people in the ready room, kicks about everyone on the server. It needs some fixing. This is easy to reproduce, get 10 people in the ready room, and run balance. About half to all will be kicked with svc_bad.
Yeah, this started occuring at the same time that the crashes started and the lag/hit reg got out of control. There's been enough improvement, mostly from the defrag, that the lag/hit reg are reasonable and the crashes are more rare, but balance as it is won't be functioning on a full server until more drastic action is taken to get a server with better performance.
That said, it would also be possible to have balance random the first (n-10) people, then run the existing balance on the rest, which should solve the kicking people issue. However, if this were done it would be important to have balance count the number of new people already on a team, rather than just evenly split the new people still in the readyroom.
Think that we need to uninstall everything, delete everything, reformatt the server computer, reinstall everything freshly, and see if the problems stop? :P
I do find it weird that it happens, yet not enough people play to have noticed the sharp change (afaik). I think random works just as well as balance would.
Just peel off some of the "extra" plug ins, and see where we are. It's already been stated several times that the machine provided by the host is not the issue. A reformat isn't needed; How about just a fresh HLDS install.
Read the TG Primer, the TGNS Primer and most importantly, the TGNS Rules | My Website!! birdie_in_Texas:ok..i feel stupid here..what is "NS"..? Wyzcrak:Natural Selection. Don't feel at a loss for not knowing the acronym. Feel at a loss for not having experienced the game.

The fact that's it's been stated doesn't make it true. When the server's performance drops dramatically with no changes to any of our plugins, something outside those plugins is responsible. Yes, we can continue to sacrifice quality of gameplay to adapt to the decreased performance, but it does not seem unreasonable to suggest ways the old server performance might be recovered.
Balance can be circumvented anyway. If you really want to join a certain team, just stand in that team's doorway and MASH the f1 or f2 key. 99 times out of 100 you'll get the team you wanted. It's a problem that needs to (but probably can't) be addressed if the server continues to use balance, imo.
Bravo Microsoft, you have now surpassed EA in poor decisions and once and for all seized the crown for the worst 'Reveal' ever. That EA were standing there on the stage with you when you did it was...

It is not often that I encounter across myself when researching a topic. I found the following in a recent article on the uses of ethnography in virtual environments:

Took a gamble and got a refurbished 30 GB OCZ Vertex 1 off of NewEgg for the low, low price of $30. Had some trouble getting the drive to be recognized by Windows or by my BIOS. Had to use a jumper...
