Discussion: Natural Selection / Natural Selection - General Discussion - Spark Editor - So I know we have had mappers here in the past. I played with it
So I know we have had mappers here in the past. I played with it for an hour or two over the last couple days. Seems pretty good, although quite buggy (as expected). I have never given mapping a try, but may do so with NS2s launch. Making a full scale map is probably a long and tedious process, but like anything else in life its nice to look at the whole product when you are finished.
What are your thoughts? (or if you haven't tried it why not!).
There is a screenshot thread here for anyone interested in seeing what people are coming up with. I am excited to see what UWE and more importantly fans put out eventually.
I ran into the 'wrong configuration' error the one day I gave it a shot. Haven't attempted to play with it since they posted the fix. I last played around with a CounterStrike map (I did not release it) for the original CS. While fairly basic the main issues I had were with the lighting not showing until I compiled the map, I am hopeful that this one is more enjoyable to use due to the real time lighting.
Most of the screenshots in that thread are very, very dark and I cannot make out detail. If you have used the editor do the screenshots come out darker than it looks in the editor?

Just because everyone does something does not mean that it is right to do.

I think it is just the look people are going for. I personally like the darker vibe I get from all these creations. I think a dark environment would be great with this game, although too much of that kind of thing could give skulks a bit of an edge. Of course no point speaking about balance till we are actually able to test these maps.
So I see that the spark editor is just about the only updates NS2's website is talking about. They wanted to release NS2 before the end of the year...but obviously missed that as well. With preorders being taken still, is there any news on when this game will actually come out? Or anyone with a good guess as to what's going on with this game since their trailer a while back?

Considering they have only released 2 screenshots, no gameplay footage. There is no playable alpha yet, I would say 6 months, at least. Maybe end of the year even. I never thought they would make fall 2009, but I thought they had their things together better then they do.
Optimistically I've just been assuming they've been throwing out the updates to the Spark editor because it's something tangible that the community can toy with while drawing attention away from the lack of actual game-related updates. Makes the release seem closer with something in hand, I suppose.
I want to believe it's because they're pushing forward behind the scenes and are dangling the shiny editor thingie in an effort to keep people from demanding constant updates on the game itself. While the actual updates were reassuring that they were still going forward, I find that I'd rather know less about the finished product so the experience isn't tainted by misinformed expectations.
The pessimist in me though says that the editor is more meant to temporarily appease those who pre-ordered on a premise of a fall 2009 delivery. To that end I feel a bit cheated, since the game updates since then suggest it wasn't that Unknown Worlds set a mark and missed it- it's that they set a date they should've known they could never meet. I have a feeling that part of the missed targets is owing to those guys deciding to try and add more stuff rather than polish what they had planned to take to market, though.
Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Zephyr: Apophis is clearly a highly sophisticated self-aware AI construct that runs on a highly modified toaster oven in Wyzcrak's basement.

I'd put the over/under on the final gold version at about mid-July.
Eight months later I finally received the reports from three peer-reviews on my latest manuscript with the University of Toronto Press. This will be my third book with the same press and the second...

Rage makes a great case for using the VR as a place for training as a sniper. Virtual training rooms for training in virtual warfare.
This post is a great TG read:
