How many supporting members are there in NS2?

As title states, I am curious how many of us have "Reserved slots"?

Re: How many supporting members are there in NS2?

The numbers are not really all that public, but from my observation we've gathered a few new supporting members, and have a very large group of older players who've reuped their sm for NS2 from years past. That being said, we have a very pure supporting membership base that's unique here at TG these days.

    TL;DR we have a lot.

Re: How many supporting members are there in NS2?

In addition, I know there has been some talk bandied about about "if we get enough supporting members, we could get another server". Well, let me clear it up a bit in saying thats not quite how it works.

Now, yes, having more supporting members coming in because of the NS2 server is definitely a plus, and not just for us, but for TG as a whole. But the SM money doesnt get divided up between the various titles at TG based on how many SM's are here because of that title. Everything gets thrown into one giant pot and all of the bills get paid from that. Excess money does NOT get kept by anyone at TG, but is put straight into the community by improving our server hardware, upgrading the forums, etc. Every penny put in by everyone in the whole community gets spent on the community. (By the way, not trying to sound mean or condescending, this is purely informational.)

Now, if we want a second NS server, we need a couple things:
    1. A BIG regular player base. When I say big, I mean of a proportion where the server is full of regulars almost every single night and on busy days (friday/saturday/sunday), theres not even enough slots on the server to accommodate the SMs most of the time.
    2. Visibility. Start making blog posts, write front page articles, get with the TGU guys and offer to teach classes (intro to NS2 anyone?), record games and post them on youtube (ala donat). The more we do these things, the bigger point #1 becomes and the more the powers that be will see that we dont just want another NS2 server, we NEED one to keep people playing here.

If we get the ball rolling on those things, I can pretty much guarantee there will be a second server in our future. Most of the old hands here would agree with me there. One of the great things about TG is that the leadership listens to the community and they pay attention. If we show them that we need a second server, it'll happen. But if we just talk about wanting one and dont take the steps to make it happen, its just a pipe dream.

Yep, I tried to explain that to someone on the server recently and they didn't get it (and I wasn't explaining it well enough, evidently).

It's easiest to explain by using NS2 as an example: When NS2 came out, TG put up a server immediately even though there might not have been enough SMs to pay the bills for NS2 at the time. How did they do that? By using some of the funds that DayZ SMs contributed. When TG first put up a DayZ server, there weren't enough DayZ SMs to pay the bills for an entire DayZ server, but you know what? The ArmA SMs ensured TG had enough to get a DayZ server up right away. And so on, and so on...

Not only that, but you also have to consider that some SMs play multiple games, so you can't just add up all the SMs and say, "Look, NS2 is bringing in $XXX.xx per month, that's twice as much as a 20 slot NS2 server costs!!!!!" If TG had 20 SMs and all 20 played NS2, but 10 also played Planetside2 and the other 10 also played ArmA, can you really say that NS2 has brought 20 SMs to TG? That's still three games supported by only 20 people.

Very much an oversimplification, but I hope this better explains what I was trying to get across the other night. I don't even remember who I was talking to, though, sorry.

This is why counting SMs is fruitless unless/until you're at the highest levels of TG leadership, with access to all of the behind-the-scenes information (the kind of access that makes this feel like more of a job than a hobby, if you're not careful).

Insofar as SMs can "always" play NS2 at TG, I'd want TG to be regularly failing that expectation before I consider a second server. That is, I likely wouldn't ask TG leadership to consider a second server until SMs regularly are denied access to a TGNS already filled with SMs.

Also, our server customizations and configuration presently make multiple assumptions that there's only one server. Would two servers read from the same config file? Would they both log to the same directory? Would opting into Temp Admin opt you in on both servers? How does that change the code? Does 'balance' consider data from both servers? Don't answer these questions. That's not the point. The point is: When (not "if", I suspect) we return to having two TGNS servers, our behind-the-scenes nerds (ahem... including me) will have a challenge on their hands. Fortunately, we love a good nerd challenge.

Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Zephyr: Apophis is clearly a highly sophisticated self-aware AI construct that runs on a highly modified toaster oven in Wyzcrak's basement.

Re: How many supporting members are there in NS2?

I don't see a need for a second server until this one is full all the time and when I have issues getting in. Would be a waste of money and split us between two servers. I was just curious how many fellow supporting members I play the game with. It would be cool to watch this SM grow. I keep looking at the count of primer signers and watch it go up.
