i can't get anywhere in this game. i just walk in circles, jump in piles of leaves, try to kill the mailbox and the house. what do i do??

me too! Then i gave up cause i didnt want to remember "this room has these exits" and so on. And it confused me that i would go up, and end up in a room that didnt have a down before.

Gah! Every seasoned adventurer knows the mighty grue lurks in all dark corners and fears nothing but light.
Maps here If you guys enjoy this sort of thing, my favorite text zork game can be found here Beyond Zork. It has a built in mapping feature.

Beyond Zork was one of the better ones. It's combat system and ability to advanced past the "Kill troll with sword" just about paved the way for other ground breaking games like Eye of the Beholder and Crusaders of the Dark Savant.
The original Zorks never interested me too much. I played them only because once I start on a series like that, I'm usually forced to whore the whole thing. That and it gave me the best line ever: "Point Wand of Destruction at Dorn Beast." Spoliers (YEA RIGHT!): And it had an evil monkey grinder you tricked into his doom by giving him a treasure chest, you got from defeating the Dorn Beast, that transported him to unicorn land. This is interesting because to defeat the Dorn Beast you had to get a giant onion from a cook. But to get the onion, you had to get him a bottle of wine from the cellar which had a man-killing crab with a crown. But before you could get to the dorn beast, you had to kill the Dust Bunnies on the second floor of the lighthouse by rubbing your feet on a stolen rug. AND EVEN FURTHER, to gain access to the lighthouse, you had to solve a riddle: My tines are long My tines are short My tines end ere, My first report You can't make this stuff up people! Beyond Zork was the epitome of "Graphics don't make a game." Too bad id never learned that lesson.... oh wait, their games are ugly AND boring. They lose.

There is an exit leading Down." wait The muffled sounds of gunfire can be heard from somewhere outside. wait The sound of gunfire intensifies becoming almost unbearable. The last of your armor is disolved. wait With a thunderous roar, the belly of the onos splits wide open, dropping you to the ground with a thud. look Data Core Delta "You are in a cavernous room with alien mucous covering almost every piece of exposed equipment and walls. There are exits to the west via a broken catwalk and east back to Access to Data Core Delta. There is a vent leading south. There is an alien hive here. There is a dead onos here. There is a dead marine here. There is a grenade launcher here. There are 3 marines with heavy armor and heavy machine guns here. Two marines begin to shoot the hive. One marine begins to weld your skin, which then turns back into armor. The commander yells something about using the grenade launcher on the hive." You guys thought I forgot about this didn't you? Well I did. But now I'm bored and I found the original thread.

Fenix, if you want a programmer, here I am.
It would be a very simple game to write and I'd be glad to help you. Send me an IM at Sky0452 if you are interested... In fact, there could be a possibility of making this a MUD! :P That would be more complex, but would be a good idea for a direction to expand the game if we wanted. edit: Just read the last page and I see Yarmo already offered his services. If you wanted I'd still be up for it, but since I didn't see that go anywhere I'm assuming you aren't really interested in making this a reality at this time either. edit2: If anyone else has some small (preferably 2d) game that needs a programmer, let me know. I haven't touched a text adventure since my last post in this thread, but back in January there was a Game Development contest at University of Michigan, and as a 1-man team I decided to make my own from scratch using Python. Turned out much better than I expected, but I still don't plan on touching any other text adventures :P
For this, though, I might make an exception... |

I never really considered this a worthwhile project. Exactly how fun would it be to play? As a MUD, it might have had some potential, but it's really just me trying (and failing) to be funny. I have no idea how to even progress through the various different areas. Is the combat system separate from the navigation? how do you determine ammo, health, etc? I'll give advice, but it's not something I could ever dedicate a whole lot of time to.
pick up GL "I don't know the word 'GL'." pick up granade launcher "There is no granade launcher here." pick up grenade launcher "You heft the GL noticing the immense weight of the device." You said you didn't know the word GL "Who are you addressing? The marines continue to shoot the hive. The commander has dropped ammo packs. sigh "You'll have to speak up! shoot hive with grenade launcher "Your GL is out of ammo." pick up ammo pack "You pick up the ammo." reload grenade launcher with ammo "You begin to reload the GL." shoot hive with grenade launcher "The GL is still reloading." wait "The marines continue to shoot the hive. A fade enters from the west. A fade attacks one of the marines, goring him badly." shoot hive with grenade launcher "The GL is still reloading." son of a bitch "You kiss your mother with that mouth? One of marines shoots the fade with his HMG, mortally wounding it. The commander yells something about 'shoot the damn hive.' Your finish reloading your GL." Thank GOD "What would you like to thank God for?" shoot hive with grenade launcher "With expert aim that could only come from countless minutes of training with this weapon, you fire 4 grenades into the hive doing massive damage with every explosion. The hive explodes into a sick spray of alien goo. The fade swipes a marine, killing him. A marine shoots the fade with his HMG, killing it. Just for the record: I despise programming. I did a bit on my Ti-85 (actually made a quite fun little Shadowrun RPG, lost it when my battery died) and some Pascal and C++ in high school. My brain just does not work that way and it showed when I stumbled through Comp Sci.
That said this next section is going to be boring as my humor meter is low and I'm really just setting things up. Bear with me (or not). "Welcome to InfoCo.... Unknown World's Natural Selection. An update is available (read: mandatory). Updating......... ..... ... .. . Would you like to know more?" no "Loading map: NS_Tanith. Please wait...... NS_Tanith: Marine Start You are standing in a rectangular room with exits leading North and East. There is a command chair here. There are 6 marines here. There is a resource node here." North "For reasons unknown, you cannot move. One of the marines says 'I'll commander, Rico builds base." who is Rico? "You don't know who Rico is, except that he is not you. You hear a beeping noise." inv "You have in your possesion: A Light Machine Gun A Pistol A knife" weild LMG "You wield your LMG. The beeping continues." status "You have 100 health. You have 50 armor. Someone says 'Let's move out.' 2 marines leave through the North exit. 2 marines leave through the east exit. 1 marine enters the command chair." North
