Re: LCD vs CRT monitors
About 20-30 FPS is all thats needed for your brain to extrapolate in between them, and create the illusion of smooth motion. But the eyes can actually register many more frames if they are available. I notice a distinct improvement in my aim playing at 90 FPS vs 45 FPS.
However, the common complaint about 60 Hz CRTs isnt about frames, really, its about flicker. LCDs dont flicker to begin with, so if you have an LCD you don't need to worry about that. 60 Hz CRTs can create a flicker effect that your eye can just barely see, which can increase eye strain. 75 Hz is usually enough to get rid of the flicker and give you a smooth picture. |

Re: LCD vs CRT monitors
yes, i know its around 20-30 fps. But, 100 hz refresh rate is significantly smoother than a 75 hz refresh rate, which I play on. I noticed a huge difference after playing NS on an LCD after playing on a CRT for a month. It's really difficult to track fast objects.
its hard for me to see on dark maps. And when aliens move past me really fast and I turn to try and track them, I can't really see for like a second. That usually ends up getting me killed.

Re: LCD vs CRT monitors
What you're concerned about is response time, not refresh rate. LCDs have a funny quirk where after the computer tells a pixel to change colors, it can take a fraction of a second before the pixel actually responds and gains the correct color. Exactly how long depends on the model of the monitor, and what type of color change is requested (sometimes "black" to "white" might take longer than "white" to "black", or something like that).
I dont pretend to be an expert on LCDs, so I can't explain it any better than that, but I can tell you that the lag due to response time will often be higher than your lag due to framerate, which can create a situation where that skulk is actually being drawn on screen in 3 positions at once, or something. |

Re: LCD vs CRT monitors
Traditional CRTs redraw the image on the screen based on their refreshrate; having one too low will produce a flickering effect. In LCDs, the image from the previous frame stays there until it gets another update telling it to change, so there's no flickering effect. For LCDs, the refreshrate's effect is negligible, but it definitely makes a large difference for CRTs. More recent LCDs with a low response time are more suitable for gaming, but the general consensus is that a good CRT is still superior.
