Could you imagine what would happen if this got slashdotted...

Re: NS2 showcase: Dynamic Infestation!
All I want for christmas is the ablity to place chambers on the ceiling. Ho Ho HoIn addition to being an atmospheric visual effect, having dynamic infestation gives us opportunities to develop some interesting game play elements.

Re: NS2 showcase: Dynamic Infestation!
As I already commented on the official thread, this is freakin amazing, even for a prototype!

Re: NS2 showcase: Dynamic Infestation!
Aw man, that would be evil if you could only place chambers on dynamic infection. I hope they would find a way to keep it at a minimum or out of vents, if it clogs the vents thats alien's loss not rines.
Still, looks sweet, i know i want NSII when ever it comes out lol

Re: NS2 showcase: Dynamic Infestation!
This all seems mindbogglingly CPU intensive to me, but Donat they're already storing the vertice information for the dynamic infestation, it should be a snap to be sure that it keeps a vent sized opening clear. A snap in terms of it being relatively easy for programmers that know math to do. Not in terms of CPU and memory.
This just seems like it would be so painful for the server.... Unless they optomize it by making it non-random and highly predictable so they don't need to generate it all on the fly...

Re: NS2 showcase: Dynamic Infestation!
In the video they said "procedural" which does mean "on the fly." It shouldn't be too CPU intensive for the server - but for the clients it might get pretty VPU demanding.
Former TGNS admin until WoW blinded me with flashy lights.

Re: NS2 showcase: Dynamic Infestation!
Gotta have faith. Any team that can put together a mod like Natural Selection can probably be counted on not to somehow fail to notice that dynamic infestation kills everyone's computer for some reason.

Re: NS2 showcase: Dynamic Infestation!
It depends... if there is no randomness it will not take too much CPU. If there is a lot of randoming and calculations it can get to be quite CPU intensive...
by "on the fly" i meant more random than procedural is.
I really imagine the only way they can do this is to have as little randomized as much, and as much calculated beforehand as possible.
And yes, I agree with you Tycho, I'm just being amazed by this from a programmers viewpoint. :P

Re: NS2 showcase: Dynamic Infestation!
For sure it is amazing, but it's probably not that CPU intensive. If you look closely the geometry on the infestation was far from impressive. I mean to say that it's simple geometry that they're cooking up, small polygon counts. Nothing overly huge in count. Still impressive though

Also wouldn't it be cool for a gorge's heal spray to spread the infestation as well? That way gorges could put towers where ever they wanted even if it had to be on the infestation. It wouldn't be permanent of course unless connected to a structure, either directly (having the structure atop it) or indirectly (a path from one structure to you location).
I think it'd just be cool to be heeling someone to have the wall behind them become slightly infested and disappear slowly just like how your warm breath creates a frost in cold air on glass. Also "Gorge Painting" would be pretty hilarious

Re: NS2 showcase: Dynamic Infestation!
Would love to see the 'creep' element tried out, even at the playtest level. Where gorges can build 'infestation colonies' then be allowed to build on those (keep in mind, that infestation that comes from those would also effect the environment).
