    NS2 showcase: Dynamic Infestation!

So enough of the boring stuff. One of the features that we've been prototyping is dynamically generating bacterial infestation in the world based on what portions of the map the alien team occupies. This feature is a departure from the original Natural Selection where the alien growth is built into the map by the designer and thus remains static throughout the game. Imagine the environment changing before your eyes as the balance between sides shifts back and forth.

    Nice. Does it affect gameplay?

Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Zephyr: Apophis is clearly a highly sophisticated self-aware AI construct that runs on a highly modified toaster oven in Wyzcrak's basement.

Excellent. Hopefully the development doesn't take a painful amount of time to finish. I would like to see ns2 become succesful, but if they drag their feet on it, I doubt it will.

Guys, thats the same engine that HL2/CS:S runs on... doesn't take a computing powerhouse to run it comfortably.

The engine it runs on may not be the issue. It really depends how effecient they make it, I really don't think adding to the map dynamically in-game is a normal feature of the engine...

But yeah, if you can run HL2 I assume you will be able to run this because they will make sure that it is not too cpu intensive. (and if it takes too much power they will probably scrap it or try to find an alternative)

Vanilla half-life 2 isn't really that demanding for a modern game. Having a 16+ multiplayer game online with normal mapping and all the goodies could potentially be a lot more demanding. I'm sure they will find a good balance.

    EDIT:

Any chance getting this on the front page? :P
