Re: Support TG in the New Year!
It's true. Questioning to learn is fine ( says the guy who doesn't have to answer the questions
), but your knowledge is all you need pursue, as you're not going to unearth some oversight. The man does his homework before he spends your money.
We don't buy "hardware" with SM dollars. We buy hardware, software, support, bandwidth (NOT cheap), failover (hardware and network), backups, 24/7 staff, reliability, etc. I'm (quite) certain we're not buying the cheapest servers there are, but you get what you pay for, and there's a reason TG servers do as well as they do. "Premiere", and all that jazz.

About the harddrive: we'll drop that box to less than 20 GB free space (Windows needs its breathing room -- heh) in no time. TGNS administration is quite spoiled by our ability to see for ourselves any event on the server at any time, and those demos take up a LOT of disk space. I've long ago built an automated solution which keeps all demos for a certain length of time before deleting those which are unused, and I'm able now to simply push that date quite a bit farther out, which is always nice when you're an administrator.Steam Community? Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Zephyr: Apophis is clearly a highly sophisticated self-aware AI construct that runs on a highly modified toaster oven in Wyzcrak's basement.

Re: Support TG in the New Year!
The method in which we host servers really isn't up for debate. But no, it's not cheaper to buy the parts and then try and then find the bandwidth. We're going for higher performance and network availability than you're going to get assembling a bunch of cheap parts and then trying to host it off a cable connection or somesuch.

Re: Support TG in the New Year!
I wasn't intending to debate it, and I'm sorry if I gave the impression I was arguing or anything.
I'm just curious about how you do it and your reasons.
So I guess my assumption that you're buying the server through a hosting company is correct? (and that bandwidth is part of the package?)

Re: Support TG in the New Year!
We are essentially leasing the server hardware directly from the datacenter/colocation facility. In most cases, a server admin will rent a game server from a company that co-locates servers in a third party datacenter. We go right to the source and work with the datacenter directly. We get far better performance, dedicated hardware, enormous amounts of bandwidth, and a direct contact in case of server or network issues. Rather than calling someone when we have a server issue so they can call their vendor so their vendor can call the datacenter to have it resolved, we just call the datacenter.
Yes. It is more expensive. But we're also not having our resources sold 5x beyond saturation by someone trying to make a buck renting out CPU time at bottom-dollar prices. It's that whole "you get what you pay for" concept.

Re: Support TG in the New Year!
I store videos/audio of lectures for back working.
And I have made Videos for presentations for some of my classes.
They do take up a bit of room
I uses a tablet to handwrite my notes, so they are bigger then text files. And I have about 60 GB of school related programs(no data) That was preloaded on my laptop ans is also backed up.
So yes, I have a lot of files. And I like to keep everything, scanned in, just in case so at the end of the year if anything is missing I have a copy.
And I never like to delete files so...

Amusingly, there is a reality tv series here in Quebec called "Pornstar Academie" which is exactly that- porn school.

Re: Support TG in the New Year!
I have about 10 puns / cracks I could make about canadian porn at this point (Canadian porn has too much fur, eh?) but will refrain (Canadian porn involves moose, eh?) in the interest of forums decency (Candaidan porn is allowed in Quebec because "OOOH" is the same in French, eh?).
Former TGNS admin until WoW blinded me with flashy lights.
