if you're currently using arrows and aren't used to wasd or anything else over there, i reccomend tfgh . . . you'll have to rebind the slotx's but you should probably be doing that anyway for best results. tfgh is logistically pretty much optimal because its in the middle of the keyboard(but not too close to your mouse hand for ergonomics), is surrounded by small buttons(except space bar) which optimizes the used space, and its almost impossible to hit alt+tab or the windows or one-with-the-page-on-it key.

I only switched from wasd because both my control and shift key crapped out on me (walking and ducking are quite important) and didnt like putting them on my mouse or anything, plus i was sick of alt+tabbing when i mic'd and looked at the scores.

i think asdf or something similar would also be worth trying . . . the only problem with using something like that(or tfgh) you'll have to rebind your settings in every fps you play from now on out, but you're probably already doing that if you're using the arrows.

Numpad player. I prefer the straight columns. Dunno why.

Of course, when I started out with Quake and Descent, I actually used the arrow keys to AIM. Yes, it's true. =(

I use the arrow keys. Been using them since Wolfenstein, Quake, Doom, etc. I can't get used to the wasd keys. My fingers are big and get trapped and tangled in all of those keys. I've tried off and on since CS beta 2 and still go back to the arrows. Maybe that's why I'm so terrible at NS?

If you go cold turkey to WASD, it will feel natural in days.

If you're not used to WASD yet, it might be better to jump to ESDF instead.

Why? One reason: The ~ key. WASD generally implies that you will be using the "1" key for something, and every time you do, you run the risk of hitting ~ by mistake, especially when you aren't used to WASD yet.

And of course, hitting "~" in the middle of battle usually means you die, since that brings up your console, shutting out all input until you close it again.

Anyone know if its possible to rebind the console to another key?
Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns.
Yoshi MCF: The fact that you speak Wyz doesn't disprove his insanity. It only proves yours.
Pokerface: It's now cheaper to put gas on my cereal. I am saddened.

I don't know about rebinding the console, but I don't use 1 in combat, although I do use WASD. I have Q, E, and R as slots 1-3, T is slot5 marines/4 aliens, and X is slot4. F is use, which is why I always circle to the left while building.
ESDF makes it painful for me to use the left ctrl key (crouch) for any length of time.

it is not possible to rebind console. if you could unbind it(which is necessary to rebind), then there would be no way to open the console. You can bind it to another key also i believe, but you can never bind anything else to ~

This may be specific to non-US keyboard layouts, but you can infact rebind toggleconsole to another key. It's not perfect, you have to quit the console with Esc and like Beowulf states, you can't bind anything else to what in my case is §, but at least it disables that key for bringing up the console.

On a side note, I must congratulate the makers of NS for finally acknowledging the fact of non-US keyboards. I no longer have to guess what : or ) are mapped to when using chat. This has always annoyed me with other hl-mods.
