Re: Vote NS Beta 1 for Memorial Day!
The only ability that was not fully removed was lerk spikes.

Re: Vote NS Beta 1 for Memorial Day!
Right. 100% of the code for Lerk-spikes is still in the game, its just not currently assigned to any lifeforms. The other old features have actually had their coding replaced, so they aren't accessible without majorly interfering with the game mechanics.

Re: Vote NS Beta 1 for Memorial Day!
I think it would be fun if it werent for all the bugs in 1.04. What we need is some smart lad to recode 1.04 and remove the bugs while keeping all of the "fun" features. It's already been done with counter-strike, called "retro-CS" for several different versions, so I do believe its possible. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt anyone could get it done by the weekend!

Re: Vote NS Beta 1 for Memorial Day!
Some of those bugs were just annoying, but you realize some of them had major impacts on game-balance, right? For example, when the borked hitboxes on alien lifeforms were finally fixed, the alien team was so drastically weakened that health numbers had to be completely overhauled. The base Onos has three times the HP now that he had in 2.01!

I tend to think that playing 1.04 isn't worth all the headaches in dealing with the bugs. I think people are forgetting just how much has improved since then, besides the balance and alien ability changes. Minimap anyone?

Re: Vote NS Beta 1 for Memorial Day!
I used to play back then but my memory is a bit fuzzy, weren't babblers the 3 hive ability gorge's got that basically let them "create" a few xeno npc skulks that just ran ahead and blew up? Wasn't the Onos' "roar" a temporary adren/movement speed boost to any alien within range? God there is so much that has changed from then to now.
I just started playing this again, I had stopped previously back around early 2004. God has the game changed. My first time in a server I got into a CO map, I had no clue what was going on.
Although the day's of a liberal usage of TF's seem to be gone, it's neat how the basic's of the game haven't changed since way back when. The game is still very much about resource denial. I would still very much take as aliens having 2 hives with 5 nodes, then 3 hives with 3 nodes.
Back then if you went Sensory first, you got banned on any server because they just assumed you were griefing your team. Movement first you got kicked from the server for griefing unless you had some uber lerks who were the server admins. Defensive first and you were thought of as a solid gorge. That mindset continued for quite a while after they made Sensory's give the area cloak. Back when you got an Obs for only phase tech and made TF's because the hit boxes on aliens were so funky you couldn't guarantee anyone who didn't cheat could hit them reliably.
As for the changes in balance, that came from people competing in this game in CAL and so forth. The dev's made this as a "fun" game. It wasn't meant to be fair. Once aliens had 3 hives, the marines were supposed to be screwed so at that point it didn't matter what abilities the aliens got. Obviously their outlook changed over time as popularity grew.

i say do it anyway . . . 1 sever at least. It can't be worse than the april 1st debacle. there are 1.04 server installers and all that floating around, so it wouldn't be that much work.

Re: Vote NS Beta 1 for Memorial Day!
I just liked being the only gorge you actually had to know what you were doing and your team had to know how to skulk because there were no lifeforms untill the gorge said. I forget exactlly how I played it but usually after 3 rts or so single gorge is the only thing I really wish wouldnt have changed. Gave the importance of the gorge just like the commander to the marines.

1.04 is awful (by comparison), although I do think it had better ambiance then the game does now.

Re: Vote NS Beta 1 for Memorial Day!
Just throw back in lerk spikes or some oldy plugin to celebrate, no need to revert back to old version
I'd love to see what people do with lerkspikes for one day.

Re: Vote NS Beta 1 for Memorial Day!
Doesn't matter if you knew where the hitboxes were. The skulks hitbox was the largest at the top of its head. The onos hitbox was the size of a marine in the middle of its body. For fade you aimmed for the legs in 2.01 becuase it was bugged when ducking.
The fact you had to know this stuff to be a good marine in versions past was sad.
1.04 was crap compared to what we have now. Epic game = reloc to the 3ed hive for 6 hours.

The only thing I miss from the old versions are the babblers.

Re: Vote NS Beta 1 for Memorial Day!
I think its fun to run through all 8 (woohoo) maps in 1.04 and then I'm all set for another 6 months or so.
I don't know there is a single aspect of 1.04 that I think I'd prefer over 3.2. Though the clip-loaded, rapid-fire 6 round GL that requires a prototype lab would be pretty pro. And even though the advent of the 2.0+ blink made everyone 1,000 times better than I was as a Fade, I wouldn't ever want to go back to 1.04's style now.
And I'd be almost more interesting to go back to 2.01, since thats really where the Current Gameplay was spawned. 1.04's underlying rules are so different its almost an entirely different game, set in the same "world" as 3.2

So both servers are 17/17 at the same time right now. Sweetness.
