Re: TGNS Map Making Team
Hey YerMom, I have some webspace, that I'd be happy to help host your file with, if you're intrested. There's also alot of hosting sites out there, for example here are a few of my favorites:
FileFront: Just look for Quick Upload...
http://www.filefront.com/
FileShack: It'll ask for a URL, just to the right it will say "Click Here" do so and it'll give you a URL.
http://www.fileshack.com/submit_file.x
Hope I helped,

Re: TGNS Map Making Team
Cool. I've got some webspace too if you need it. But please, do us a favor and don't use one of the sites that make us wait in queue for an hour.

Just hit up google for free file upload and you'll find a ton that don't even require you to login. Or, if that's not something you'd want to do , I can give you access to my online space.aka Roland (the Headless Thompson Gunner; not of Gilead)

Re: TGNS Map Making Team
Kormendi has set up some space for me to upload to. I've got access to 500 megs of space, which each of the .RMF or .MAP files I have are no more than a few hundred KB so far (they will get much larger).
I'll upload them tomorrow.

Re: TGNS Map Making Team
I used to make maps for CS, didn't really release anything but I made some stuff for fun. That was like 5 years ago.
So I got curious with this thread and so I made some kind of test and built a quite simple room. I would like to get one or two advices, and then maybe I'll find the time to develop an actual map.
Here are the screenshots:

prophotohost.com/uploads/88aff245cf.jpg
prophotohost.com/uploads/327552b202.jpg
prophotohost.com/uploads/e6b892c9cf.jpg
(I couldn't add the http/www because the board says I need to have 15 or more posts before posting URLs =\ anyway, it should work fine if you just copy and paste that)
I still can't get the lightning to be as I really want and I'm not too convinced about that static fan I put on the ceiling. Anyway, I'd like to now if you guys could bear a map with that kind of detail, cause adding a lot more stuff to every room in a map would really be a pain in the ass.
Oh, and Yer Mom, the pics of Marine Start you posted are good, but I think you can work more in harmonizing the textures. Maybe you could also enhance the lightning too.

Re: TGNS Map Making Team
I love your lighting lagarto! It makes for a very alien friendly room. In terms of entrances and exits though, I didn't see one, save the one where I assume the marine came from. Best lighting I've seen in a room, I think, although it doesn't seem to look uniform, you know? Great room other than that though!

Some of my work, not all of it.

I may be able to make custom sprites, but its been a LONG time since i've made one, and i'll have to re-read through everything to get things going again.
Plus school/work/girlfriend may get in the way from time to time.Oyee

Re: TGNS Map Making Team
The marine start I made was extremely rough, and has changed significantly since the last screenshots I've posted. I'm running short on time as I start school on the 18th, 8am-3pmish, full time, 5 days a week. Still leaves me plenty of time to get things done, but I'll have to see how things go.
I'm not going to be posting anymore screens untill I get a solid structure on the entire map itself. I've developed a 3 man team including myself, Slayer, and Irish_Pirate who normally meet rather late at night on TS and discuss problems and etc. We're normally there at about 11PM central time.
If anyone at all has any questions, feel free to post them here or leave me a message to get on TS sometime.
If anyone at all wants to join in on the teamwork, you're more than welcome, and we will be developing a more solid meeting schedule in the near future. Although, I'm not going to develop anything that's completely solid untill I see that more people are interested in joining the team.
Irish has agreed to do touch up work on the map when it's basically completed, and Irish has agreed to do a hive. Slayer may be doing a hive, but he's still in his learning phase.
The following hives have been selected for use:
Coolant - Myself
Power Generator - Slayer? (Not sure on this. If he isn't, we have a spot available for someone to do a hive.)
Water Purification - Irish_Pirate
We've begun developing a background story for the map itself:
You awaken in a small, cramped space. Your arms and legs are amazingly refreshed concidering your cramped condition. You suddenly hear a voice playing in your ear, "SWC-338 has reached it's target. Teleportation sequence activated." After a few seconds of what feels like nostalgia, your feet are firmly planted on the floor of Expedition 14 to a Kharaa infested planet. Through a nearby window you see that you are underground in what seems like a mining facility. There are many pipes around you that are searing hot. Steam leaks from the pipes and moisture drips from them. You glance around the room as a feeling crosses over you. You can't seem to pick out any alien forms in the shadows, but you know that something has to be watching you from somewhere. You hear your commander from behind you say, "Let's get to work, Marines."
Basically, you're on an alien planting in a mining facility that has been taken over by aliens.
I need rooms to be built as well. If anyone would like to take a room project, you're welcome to it. I want a detailed layout of the room, a name for the room, and it's purpose. You are also welcome to take on hallways, but I have to say that if you're going to do hallways, I need you to do more than one. Hallways will come much later in the process, as far as structured, complex hallways design goes. Rooms will begin ASAP because they will take a lot more detail and thought. Everything that goes into this map must be cleared by all other members of the team. I'm not going to just take any room and throw it in.

Re: TGNS Map Making Team
I'm doing one of the rooms outside the hive called Emergency Room. Well the design is an emergency room, but I don't think the name fits a mine factory.
Basically it has a bunch of red lights that go on and off and theres a horn.
There are some secrets to the room as well :P. Yer Mom shush.
And I also need some people to give me there opinion on the design and how it looks. So if anyone wants to help me out let me know.

Does anyone know if a trigger_push will move a dead body? I'm having a hard time testing it on my own.

Re: TGNS Map Making Team
Guess what fella's? NEW SCREENSHOT TIME!
I've revamped some of marine start. Moved on down with the hallway. Still having trouble deciding on a ceiling for the hallway I've made outside of marine start, but lighting is basically in place, and I've added a ton of detail to this next hallway and MY FIRST RES NODE! But it's not working right... it's placing a marine node there when I compile the map, so I don't know yet... I'll get it eventually. The textures of the node room will eventually change.
I've reached a total compile time of 5 minutes now. When the map I worked on for CSS was finished, it's total compile time was somewhere near 18 hours on a 2.8Ghz P4. 5 minutes is nothing compared to that, but it's painful when you have to sit and wait on it, lol.
While I'm waiting on the compile, what do you guys think about adding a Music Track to play in the ready room? I suppose I can, concidering the rave room in that one map. What do you guys think, and does anyone know how to do it?

Having some FPS issues, just noticed. When I'm in MS or near it and I look towards Geographical Surveying, my FPS drops. Think it may be the glass, or the lighting from the flicker inside the glass behind the node. Notice the FPS in the bottom right.

Things are looking good. I'm still trying to learn things when I can get time here and there, but it looks like I'm way behind the curve...

Re: TGNS Map Making Team
I'm very impressed. I am put to shame, I have only put a few hours in to my section and I don't have all the textures properly selected and aligned yet. I will start that as soon as I finish the layout of the room. I have a couple more "machine" things to add and a small room on the second level still left to create.
A music track would increase the amount people have to download by the size of the .wav file (source allows mp3s so you might see more music in NS:S) so I am generally opposed. I can help you set it up if you decide to go with it anyway though. There should be an ambient noise entity or something that is clearly labeled as the type of thing that would make sounds. I can look it up when I'm at my computer and can open up hammer. BTW, check your mail mom, I think I sent you some pictures of what I have so far.
xtcmen, try func_illusionary with the parameters "render mode = solid" and "render amount 255" then create a brush covering the same area as the railing but use the "clip" texture.
