helpful communication binds
I know I'm the Microphone Gestapo and everything, but there are times when the message you need to send to your team is not urgent enough to justify taking time on the voicecomm, or maybe your message is competing with everyone ELSE'S urgent message.
That's when text binds come in very handy. I've seen some of you use them, and I'd like to encourage that. So, here are mine. Other folks can post theirs. I had longer, more descriptive binds, but I quickly shortened their length when I realized how annoying and distracting it was to have to look at other people's binds crossing through my aiming cone.
These binds were inspired by the setup that Tactical Gamer Ghost Recon REQUIRES you to use if you're going to play on those servers. Confined within the numeric "keypad" on the right side of your keyboard, the keys are easily memorizable, and eventually you're able to slap the bind of choice during the game without even looking at the keyboard.
If you want to use these binds, simply add these lines to the bottom of your config.cfg file in the NS directory of Half-Life.
// 0 key
// general acknowledgement of communication
bind "KP_INS" "say_team rgr"
// . (decimal point) key
// general thank you
bind "KP_DEL" "say_team ty"
// 1 key
// notification that you are moving, perhaps to a waypoint
bind "KP_END" "say_team mvng"
// 2 key
// notification that you are prepared for another task
bind "KP_DOWNARROW" "say_team rdy"
// 3 key
// notification to those nearby that you are guarding them
bind "KP_PGDN" "say_team grdng"
// 4 key
// notification to those nearby that you are building and need to be guarded
bind "KP_LEFTARROW" "say_team bldg"
// 5 key
// general negative response
bind "KP_5" "say_team neg"
// 6 key
// notification that you did not successfully understand last communication
bind "KP_RIGHTARROW" "say_team no copy"
// 7 key
// notification that an enemy is at your location (which NS 2.x gives)
bind "KP_HOME" "say_team enemy"
// 8 key
// request for a medpack at your location (which NS 2.x gives)
bind "KP_UPARROW" "say_team medpack"
// 9 key
// request for ammo at your location (which NS 2.x gives)
bind "KP_PGUP" "say_team ammo"
// - (minus) key
// notification that you have confirmation on two hives online
bind "KP_MINUS" "say_team two hives"
// + (plus) key
// notification to your team and commander that you are parasited
bind "KP_PLUS" "say_team parasited"

nice, does the server still have that thing where you type like %l or something and it says where you are?
that could help..

yea, i need that, and your health and body armor...good stuff like that
-
10-08-2003, 09:05 PM #5That used to be included in my binds, along with %h and %a, but the %l is now (as of 2.x) included in say_team messages by default, and I found health and armor to rarely help anyone on my team make a decision about anything (plus we don't use that plugin anymore, as %l was the most useful feature), so I no longer have that in the binds.

Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Zephyr: Apophis is clearly a highly sophisticated self-aware AI construct that runs on a highly modified toaster oven in Wyzcrak's basement.

Umm....thats nice and all, but since your making binds for words, why bother to abbreviate? Thats like speaking shorthand
I mean...lets just take a look at a few of these...
"KP_END" "say_team mvng"
bind "KP_DOWNARROW" "say_team rdy"
bind "KP_PGDN" "say_team grdng"
bind "KP_PGDN" "say_team bldg"
I mean...your making a bind!!! At least spell out the word!!Filled with Awesome.

10-12-2003, 07:01 PM #10Just in case you asked the question seeking a real answer, I have one. The point is to communicate the message. When I use these binds (and I use them often), I'm taking someone else's screen real estate, and I don't want to take any more than is absolutely necessary. My "Hey COMM I'm moving to that spot you told me to go to" or "Moving" or whatever bind might be appearing on your screen right on top of that fade or skulk your tracking as you try to kill it.

10-12-2003, 07:12 PM #12You never had to. It's a choice you make. And you'll keep making it. And I'll still yell at you. And you'll still die unnecessarily. Go grow a pair and get a microphone.

I have something similar, using the command menu. It also plays the corrisponding Marine Voice Message when appropriate. Aka, when requiriing orders, I have my menu bound to V, so I hit V, and my command menu comes up, with the following options (beats head to remember, as is at work)
1. Need Medpack - > 1. Need Medpack! 2. Squad needs meds!
2. Need Ammo -> 1. Need Ammo! 2. Squad needs ammo!
3. Need Orders -> 1. Need orders! 2. Squad needs orders!
(and I can't remember the rest. I'll post the full command map when I get home, with a screenshot)
Note that the menu is kinda hefty, so unless you have it memorized, its not a good idea to call up in the middle of battle
I am the one, I am the zero, I am your low resolution hero.
