Re: Why sometimes not to hit the hive in a Rush

I played on I think nothing (if that's the one with foreboding and power silo hive) as a marine one game and the aliens had the silo hive going up (and it was empty after we killed the gorge). We all got in, got in position, and one person just tapped the hive with a pistol. Of course a few skulks immediately popped in, but we weren't aiming for the hive, we were waiting for them so we just shot them. When they stopped coming in we reloaded, tapped the hive again, repeated. We took down the hive with almost no difficulty, partly because the aliens had to wait to spawn back in, and partly because there were a few people watching for the skulks while everyone else shot.

This wouldn't have worked AS well with higher lifeforms, but it just gives something to think about. :P

It also depends on how well your team is working together, and how well they can aim. If I have a team that can't break a 1:! ratio early game, there is no point in having them hit lifeforms. Based on the amount of RTs, it is usually better to go for the hive rather than the chambers as they can be easily replaced.

Strategies are submissive to the team, not the other way around. So its important to add variables and variations to strategies/tactics so that they can accomodate more situations.

It will be replaced before any hive rush, but I think it's worth mentioning here in the scheme of going into the hive and killing things other than the hive.

If a couple marines could find a way to regularly get into the alien hive and take out the node, aliens would have to considerably rethink thier defence strategy.
One of the last games I was in was commanded by Yoshi, and I was a part of the marine squad that successfully killed the hive RT early game. I think there were three of us there which put it at less than two clips of ammo each. Potentially we could have killed the node faster than one marine can kill one chamber. I don't recall if we actually did but the aliens did not have a whole lot of time to react either way.

The more I think about it, the more I like the number three for the node rush. The alien reaction time seems to allow for two clips of ammo to be emptied by one marine in the hive before they get there (hence my success in killing chambers which takes slightly more than two clips). A shotgun was not necessary with three of us and in the early alien push for ground the hive node way probably farther away from the nearest alien than any other alien node on the map.

Just thought I would share the success story.
