Re: Anti-smurf plugin
Since it is the administration policy not to discuss details (or sometimes even generalities) of administration in public, I will simply say this: There are a lot of players who do not wish to identify themselves who are a recurring hassle. The information provided by this plugin is invaluable in terms of the actual informational value as well as in terms of the ease and immediacy of the information being available. This plugin will not be going away in the near future.
On a more specific level, if you or any other player feel that you have an admin-assigned name that is unwarranted or unjust, like any other administration issue, please bring it up privately and via forum PM to the admin who assigned it (or if you don't know who it is just send it to any admin and we'll delegate it). No guarantee that it will be cleared but if you have a legitimate issue, for example, if you have a name that you would rather be known as from now on, we sometimes but infrequently make adjustments.

Re: Anti-smurf plugin
I know I've won at least one game because I was using an alternate name while comming, and the other team didn't recognize me. I was using a tactic which most people never touch, but which I carry out frequently enough for most regs to start thinking about the possibility as soon as they realize Kero is in the chair (delayed shotty rush )...so the mere fact that the name at the top of the list wasn't Kerostasis was enough to prevent them from organizing a defense against my attacks, and we caught them by surprise and won.
I suppose this is an argument in favor of knowing who people are, as you often plan against the players as much as against the actual game scouting info--but it certainly felt good getting to the ready room afterwards and hearing the other team lead off with "we totally weren't expecting that without Kero on your team," and grinning for a moment before pointing out that I actually was on the team.
Now days I'm always a little afraid to change my name, for fear I might wind up with a tag attached to the end of it though...

Re: Anti-smurf plugin
i play on tg regularly (only recently registered) and would smurf from time to time.
so in response to your post micro, even before i was registered the system would catch me and post the [flip] tag to the end of whatever smurf name i was using.
i can see how some people would get annoyed with smurfing...i like to know who i'm playing with, which makes me somewhat of a hypocrite for changing my name.
anyways, micro's suggestion of turning off the antismurf plug-in as an admin option for captain's games/scrims i don't really like either. i feel like the same arguments apply. if, for example, i was scrimming micro's team in the new TG tournament (i'm not in the tournament, but whatever) i would like to know who i killed or who killed me. I wouldn't want the other team to all have joke names.
my two cents,
flip.

Can someone explain why this is a bad thing? It only denied the enemy the ability to metagame Kero's strategy. While I do understand the point about unchanging names building community, I often see it used to know how the opponent will act as opposed to identifying who you are playing with.
For those that don't want to participate in the community, but like playing on the server a lot, is their presence with different names each time any different than a random pub player? Is the problem that they are taking the slot of someone who may join the community?

It doesn't work that way, snoogums. The server serves the community, not the other way around. If you like playing on the server a lot, it's because of a very conscious effort on the part of the community and its administration to make the server a place worth playing on for people with similar interests.
We play for the social aspect of the game, and that type of player is the kind we would prefer to have on the server.
