Fireteam Leader Guide
Let's build this out as we play more. It's the FTL-specific tips and tricks thread! I'll start with a few from last night.
Waypoints - With the map open ('M' key), put down your first waypoint as a move-maker. Then holding down RIGHT shift key while placing additional move markers will create waypoints. This path will show up on your FTM's map.
Directing Fire - If your squad is stationary, all FTM's can open the compass and leave it open - although they can't run around with it open, they can still aim and shoot. Having the compass open allows them to see orders right on their screen. For distance engagements, the FTL can use his binoculars to spot OPFOR positions and place the 'attack here' marker on them. Then the FTM's will see that marker in the hud and be able to more accurately direct fire.Last edited by WhiskeySix; 10-08-2009 at 11:27 AM.

Need your input on being FTL
Hey guys,
I need some advice on actually leading a fire team. I'll be the first to admit that I'm bad at it. The biggest reason is a that I'm a reserved person to begin with so asserting myself and actually getting people while instilling confidence isn't something that is easy for me. Most of the time I feel like I'm just winging it and don't really have a plan or i get so caught up in the firefight that I forget what I'm doing. :/ This makes it frustrating me for but I'm sure also for that that I'm attempting to lead because it isn't organized. I've tried leading a few times in DR coop and some in arma but never with very good results.
Does anyone have any tips on leading? Or any suggested reading materials on fireteam movement and engagement tactics?

The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men.

Re: Need your input on being FTL
I have yet to play OPF2 but i have a couple of hours under my belt squad leading in
BF2. My advice would be to keep the plan simple and short. Keep praising your men when they accomplish a goal but dont overdue it, they arent dogs. Keep the atmosphere within the squad light but when someone gets a little cocky and does something outside of your plan, kick the crap out em. Let them know you want them to have fun but also be a tight unit. Dont be afraid to listen to others suggestions. You may not agree with them but the key is to let them know that you listened.
Hope this helps a little bit.

Re: Need your input on being FTL
You already took the first big step by trying it. Doing it is the best way to learn and get better.
Some of what you are looking for can be found here in the tactical wiki. This is information written for Bf2, but a lot of it applies to OFP2.
Some basic advice that has been passed on to me from others at TG (in the context of what I have seen on a few campaigns in OFP2) would be:
1. Understand your objective
2. Know and use your available resources
3. Always know the angles/use flanking maneuvers
4. Use move markers when you can
5. Know when to fight and when to regroup
6. Don't throw your guys to the lions - put them in position to have the advantage.
7. Utilize high ground advantage when you can.
8. Move in cover when you can
9. Keep yourself healed and healthy
10. Don't get stressed - it does not help morale
I am sure many will have others, those are just a few. Most of the things I listed are learn as you go, so keep at it.
I would guess being an SL in ArmA about as hard as it gets so you will probably find this a little easier.|TG-12th| jb4

Re: Fireteam Leader Guide
Thank you, the wiki link was a very good read, hopefully I'll be able to put some of that into practice. I just need some willing victims

Re: Fireteam Leader Guide
I'm going to say some things that are different from the others so far, so bear with me...
Rules for FTL in this game...:
1) Forget the map/waypoint system other then for pointing you in the right direction unless you are playing with bots on your team. (bots need constant direction) You are leading 3 other guys, and there is really no reason to ever seperate the fireteam into 2 smaller groups due to how objectives/enemies are laid out. If 3 other guys cant stay with you, well, honestly find new guys to play with or quit moving without telling your team. It's your job to keep your team organized and together, dont forget that.
2)Recognize your squads loadout, and lead them accordingly. Some maps have the FTL with the only scoped weapon in the squad, you will have to lead your troops accordingly and direct their fire more precisely for some of the longer range engagements. Always ditch un-scoped weapons (except for the grenadier until he runs out of grenades) for scoped upgrades whenever possible.
3) It is the FTL's job to keep the medic alive, you should never lead him into trouble. If the medic isnt the last one to die, re-examine your tactics. Constantly let your medic know he has to stay out of trouble as much as possible, otherwise he might not be there later on to play the role of "hero". I typically let the medic pick up the first "found" scoped weapon, so he can be usefull while at a safe distance.
4) Steal vehicles whenever it's prudent, and use your remaining force to protect that vehicle! Mission #3 is easy as all get out if you take a stryker right at mission start and keep it alive until the end. Be sure to allow your infantry to disembark from the vehicle before you get into a hot zone, if they watch your back, you won't regret it.
5)Remember "mission first, killing second". The only time you have to engage enemies is when the mission demands it. (destroy an AAA truck guarded by 4 tangos) You will find the missions go a lot smoother when you dont spend 15 minutes trying to figure out a perfect method to take a fortified position you really could have just avoided in the first place. Dont risk your life, or your squads lives unless you HAVE to.
6) Use terrain smartly, while once the enemies know you are there, grass wont help you hide, if they dont know you are there, you can get pretty close to them if you move smartly and are patient.
7) Information wins battles. Just because you aren't engaging enemies you dont have to doesnt mean you should steer clear of all enemies. Knowing where they are makes it easier to predict where enemy reinforcements might come from, and you can deploy your troops accordingly.

Re: Fireteam Leader Guide
Set your Priorities too, there are a few levels where getting the secondary objective done first will give you an advantage while trying to get the primary objective done. Such as getting rid of SAM's so you can get air support while you take out mortar sites.
