    Leading your AI Squad

I haven't finished very much of the game yet because I've been experimenting with the map editor to test out different situations and learn how the squad AI is programmed to behave. I hope you find some of this info useful.

    Scouting
    ------------
-While you are scouting, keep in mind that you can see enemy infantry with your binoculars at distances of up to 1500 meters or more.

-The rangefinder on your binoculars only works up to a distance of 800m.

-Even though your rangefinder works within 800m and you can clearly see enemy infantry at this distance, your avatar won't "register" the enemy or add them to the map until you are within 600m. Once you are within 600m, the target you spot is added to your map. Your avatar may not "call out" the target until you get closer, but you'll still be able to see the EI marker on your map. Once they are marked on the map, they are in a "spotted" state.

-Enemy Infantry can and will spot you quickly if you are within 300m and they are looking in your direction. Their sensitivity seems to be variable in my tests, depending on elevation, time of day, cover, and distance.

    Squad AI Commands
    --------------------------
-The "return fire" ROE will tell your team to fire only if fired upon. If they see an enemy that hasn't engaged your team, they will not fire. This is the preferred ROE to use while moving from checkpoint to checkpoint. Pay attention to your ROE and avoid engaging enemy infantry when it is unnecessary.

-The "assault" command will cause your FAI (friendly AI) to start moving directly at the target (no flanking or moving from cover to cover, just a direct route). They will fire on any targets encountered while moving to the target area. They will continue to move while firing, which makes them less accurate. Once they are at the target area they will wait for you.

-You can give the assault command on an area or on an enemy target.

-The enemy doesn't have to be "spotted" for you to give an assault command on him. You can assault targets from beyond 600m.

-The "engage" command causes your FAI to fire upon the target from your current position. They will continue firing until the target is down.

-The "engage" command isn't available until after you have "spotted" the enemy and added them to the map, so you must be within 600m to use the engage command.

-Once you give the engage command, the FAI will fire using whatever stance he is currently at. If you want your FAI to engage while prone, put him in "follow me" mode, and go prone yourself, then give the order to engage.

-Your FAI will not engage a target if he is outside the effective range for his weapon. If you tell your machinegunner to engage a target 500m away, he will just sit there. It is good to know the effective range of each of the weapons your squad is using.

    Weapon Ranges
    ---------------------
*This is the maximum range your FAI must be within for the "engage" command to work. Otherwise they will just sit there:

    Sniper: 500m
    Rifleman: 300m
    Machinegunner: 150m

I don't know yet if there are subtle differences between weapon models, or if those three classes of weapons all have the same range between specific make/models. I have some posts on the Codemasters forums trying to get more info about this so I don't have to test each weapon in the map editor. I'll test more weapons and compile a list if I don't get a response from CM.

-You CAN actually sneak up on enemy infantry and knife them! The knife is an insta-kill. Make sure you are directly behind the EI and that you are in a crouched stance once you are within 100m. Don't run while crouched. You can get all the way up behind him this way without needing to go prone at closer distances. This is a fun tactic when playing coop on mission 2. There are several 2-3 man outposts that you can flank, sneak up behind them, and do a synchronized knife kill. It's pretty fun.

    Moving Your Team
    ------------------------
-Much like Arma, success depends on spotting the enemy first, setting up good flanking positions, and engaging from superior position at the proper range.

-As FTL, you should always be scouting with your binoculars unless you are engaged in a firefight. It's tempting to rely on your weapon optics to do your scouting, but the rangefinder is key. Make sure you engage at a proper range to allow your FAI to actually hit them. Don't expect your machinegunner to actually hit anything at 200m or even fire on anything at that range.

-While moving toward your next objective, plan your route on the map. Pay attention to the terrain and try to pick checkpoints along your route that give you a tactical advantage for fighting AND for scouting.

-Don't move in-between EI positions if possible. If you get spotted, you will get outflanked. Take a path that allows you to keep possible targets coming from one direction.

-Keep in mind that engaging a group of enemies will likely draw the attention of other enemies in the area. Plan your route so that if other enemies in the area start moving to attack, you can avoid getting flanked.

-"Always on high ground" is a poor strategy. Being on high ground makes you easier to spot and shoot at. Moving in-between hills and other elevations is often a much safer route.

-Before moving to the next checkpoint on your route, make sure you have scouted your flanks. If you are confident they are clear, use a column formation to keep firepower to the front. If you could get attacked from the sides, keep your team in wedge formation.

-Suppressing fire and flanking is the best way to assault a position.

-Be careful of moving up to a hilltop to scout the area beyond. It really sucks to move up to the crest of a hill and get shot by EI before you could even scout them. If you have time, go around the hill and scout for what is beyond it. If you have to peek your head over the hill to scout, then try this procedure:

    1. Assume that there will be EI just over the hill looking in your direction and plan accordingly.

    2. Make sure your flanks are scouted before looking over the hill. If you are likely to get surrounded during a firefight, don't take the risk and find a different path.

    3. Locate a fallback spot and put your FAI there in a defensive position in column formation where they will have maximum advantage to defend that hill. Make sure you use the "defend" command in the menu. This spot should have cover and be within weapons-effective range for your entire team without being too close.

    4. Creep up to the top of the hill and scout. If you are sighted and engaged, fall back to your team and wait for the EI to come charging over the hill. Trust your team to take them down while you keep an eye on your flanks during the firefight using your weapon optics. If you get surrounded, you will probably be done for.

    Commanding From the Map
    ----------------------------
-You can actually give more complex series of commands to your AI from the map view. If you are in the map view, you can give a series of commands to follow in steps by holding down the shift key. For example, if you hold down shift, you can right click several places on the map and have the AI move to a series of waypoints.

-You can also give other commands as waypoints by accessing the "advanced" command menu in the map view. When you go to the map view, just hit the spacebar, and you should get an additional menu of commands at the top. This way, you can tell your team to do a series of different tasks and create a plan:

    1. Move to first waypoint.
    2. Assault second waypoint.
    3. Provide suppressive fire on third waypoint.

I hope this helps. I'm going to continue testing different things using the mission editor and I'll post more as I go. The next thing I want to test is suppressive fire ranges and using the "fall back" command properly.

Under Moving your team you state: -...If you are confident they are clear, use a column formation to keep firepower to the front...

Don't you mean use a line formation to keep firepower to the front. A column puts everyone directly behind the leader, front to back, and is ineffective for firing to the front.

Yes, I DID mean line formation! Thanks for catching that.

Nice writeup Miles! And thanks for the mini jones fix. I'm 2 weeks into a 3.5 week business trip. I can't wait to get back and play!
