OK - so the 22nd's out

Guys, all I can say is give it another chance... it very well may not be for you, and that's fine! BUT making a final opinion out of a first impression... after playing it once or twice in one or two of the modes seems like a good way to realize your suspicions.

We'll have to start posting some AARs of the amazing time we've been having! Last night was intense! This screen is mostly medium details... we had just completed the second mission (on hardcore mode), where we were tasked with a stealth infiltration to destroy SAM defenses. Once we destroyed the main radar installation, we moved to this valley to await pickup. As we reached the rendezvous point, cobras (now SAM-free) started flying overhead... one took out something on the other side of the valley.. it was reallly satisfying... see the two flashes then a second late here the boo-boom

Your right on the textures. They are not high enough, I'm blaming the 360 for this. CM needs to allow those textures to go higher.

Have you replayed that mission? I noticed a lot of this stuff is scripted and the same every time... activated by a trigger.

It's scripted, they attack in different ways though. I've seen rockets and guns

The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men.

no, just finished it last night...

I guess I'm not sure what you mean by scripted - the cobra's flying by, or the AI in the mission itself? I assume the game didn't randomly 'decide' to send in the cobras and blow-up that stuff across the valley just as we reached the extraction point? <shrug>

... but it didn't 'feel' scripted because we were so immersed... we just finally completed the hour long mission and we're pumped! We were finally able let our guard down and were quietly enjoying the view and sense of accomplishment. So when the cavalry came flying in and blew the crap out of some badguys, it was a nice exclamation point to the mission... it was a "oh yeah! damn! you see that?!" moment... not a "pff, too scripted" moment

It took us three tries to complete this mission: The first time we took too long and weren't able to disable the anti-ship-missile battery before the fleet got in range. The second time, we got killed by flanking AI. The third try, we completed it. Each time we took a slightly different approach... attacking from a ridgeline, then valley, then just trying to sneak through the defenses and patrols. Every time the enemy AI was a little different in their location and approach. Of course, many were the same - as morgan said "there really aren't too many ways to defend a bunker"....

As far as "triggers" go, we didn't come across any in mission - aside from the fact that opening fire is a sure way to get enemy units hunting you. Heh... on the final try, we actually spotted two OPFOR troops trying to flank us along a tree line. We didn't have a clear shot on eachother, so I ordered our FT to continue along our side of the treeline... parallel to the path of the bounding pair of AI. I really appreciated it as it was happening, as both sides tried to out-flank the other We ended up mirroring eachother for a good 500m, trading shots now and then, until finally, we were able to cut them off and someone on our FT got a clean shot and took them out.

Re: OFP2 may not be for you.

I asked because I noticed this in the first mission when I played it for the second and third time. If you go south from the spawn, before you approach the enemy position near the radar, there 's a certain point where a 'tip' will come up your screen and right after you click it, the AI will spawn and come in from behind the little house in front of you. Happened all 3 times when I played that mission. That is what I love so much about ARMA 2, you can play a mission over and over and the AI will never be in the same spot twice... something I have yet to experience in OFPDR.

Re: OFP2 may not be for you.

gotcha... it seems there's two types of 'placements' for AI. Some are stationed to defend a 'thing' (bunker, building, radar-tower, etc)... others are 'patrolling'.

(Has the AI changed ArmA -> ArmA2? I only ask because I clearly remember missions in the first ArmA where enemy AI were in the exact same place everytime. Heh, in fact, we couldn't finish some missions [I'm looking at you 'Surgical Strike'] even with this knowledge.)

The AI in ARMA 2 is much better than ARMA I, Whiskey Six.. Still dumb at times but often unpredictable in their movement to contact.

I posted my comment on how I felt about the game as an individual not just as a member of the 22nd, as a matter of fact I've never talked to any of the 22nd about this game so inferring that this is a the "22nd down on this game" is incorrect.

Well at least OFP2 works, which is something ARMA2 running on any computer with any OS and with any level of settings or modifications is incapable of. ARMA2 would be great if it worked but a Ferrari that can't get over 20MPH is just a pretty looking but utterly pointless pos just like ARMA2.
