I would say get it now. That means you can get to grips with the game before it gets modded.
To be honest I think its a good enough game to play without being modded. The single player is solid, as is the Co-Op, granted no MP yet but that should be here soon. *fingers crossed

Plenty of content to keep you going 'till the mods / DLC come along
Also several members of the community are hosting Co-OP sessions, so if the Single Player isn't your thing then you can still join in.

There's MP, it's just pretty lack luster right now with no dedicated server support. I personally think it's worth buying and doesn't need modding, the only tweaks I would like to see are either larger MP maps or less players in MP. Other than that I think the game is pretty solid.
