Re: Show your desktop Month :P
Sniper, try this. I assume that you are using the wand tool or the lasso tool to extract your images, yes?
If so, stop now. Just stop. In order to properly extract an image ive found that zooming to 600% and using my trusty size 2 eraser works the best. I spent 6 hours extracting ---> THIS <--- Image ( Wallpaper that I made for a friend ). The trick is to open up the image that you want to extract from and copy it over to a new image with a transparent background. After you are finished your preliminary extraction add in a new layer that is completely black and place the extracted layer on top of it. What that allows you to do is see the tiny spots that you miss and go over them with your eraser again. Also using a darker background helps get the minute white ( or original colour ) outline from off of the extraction. Sure it takes time but the results are worth it if you value quality work ( dont take that as an insult ). Also a word of friendly advice : Lens flares are the devil. Use them in moderation and only with situational permission. ![]() |

Second: I've done way to many of these, I recomend a mix. Start with the wand, then use the lasso to clean the selection up. Then use a brush or eraser to clean up the mask so the edges are cleaner. This will take time and you might need to learn about masks in photoshop but its much better. Just my opinion ![]() |

Re: Show your desktop Month :P
Sniper : I use retail Photoshop 7.0 exclusively. Ok well sometimes MS Paint too, but thats for sheer comedy value.

Oh, masking is fantastic and I use it often. I am just a perfectionist when it comes to my extractions, and I often find myself extracting images that are too detailed to use the wand effectively. Sure sometimes I use the lasso tool to extract from well away from the image but Ive just found through trial and error that erasing, while the most time consuming, produces the best results ( in my opinion ). But yeah, I am in complete agreeance with you that layer masking owns. *edit* Sniper : another tip. Once you are finished with your extraction I suggust adding in a guassian blur of .1 ( depends on the size of the image, really ) to soften it up and remove the 'papery' look that one gets from using scans. Also, once you place your extraction onto the main image try duplicating the extraction layer and overlaying it with a 'screen' or 'soft light' settings with reduced transparency. It brings out the colours and adds in some more contrast giving the extraction a more 'realistic' look. |

Re: Show your desktop Month :P
Makes sense Tycho, you can use the same size brush as your eraser and work the mask. The mask is so you can always go back (even after saving, closing and opening) and edit your extraction.
True dat on the blur, or you can feather too I think. But Tychos got it down ![]() |

Re: Show your desktop Month :P
Through Trial and error for the most part. Either that or open up a screenshot or scan of Inuyasha ( Its not Inu Yasha ) and use the colours from that. You can simply click on your colour pallete and then click on the image which will set the colour you clicked on to the pallet. Easy squeezy.
