Re: Google Earth - Cool places to visit

I think that's the Airplane Graveyard made famous by movies like Real Genius and Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. The military mothballs many planes and just dumps others there.

That is Davis Monthan AFB and I think it's the largest graveyard in the world. They keep equipment in all different stages of "mothball" status. Some are ready to be reactivated in a matter of days. Some would need months. Some are only fit to be parts... I used to live right next to the base, and I remember getting caught by the SP a couple of times when we'd sneak under or over the fence and played in the planes...

Here's the house I grew up in: 32°10'16.54"N 110°49'28.60"W

How the heck do you copy coordinates from Google Earth? I had to type it out by hand...

Re: Google Earth - Cool places to visit

Is there a way to make it so we can attach files to the posts?

If so, it'd be so much easier to share these... either that, or you guys tell me how you're copying those coordinates so easily out of google earth..

anyways, I thought this was a pretty cool find, it's a slight image displacement that I found while simply looking accross the US/Canada border. Why was I doing such a thing? Cause I was bored out of my mind... heh....

49° 0'8.11"N 122°39'55.09"W

Create a placemark, click on it and edit it, it will give you the exact coordinates to copy paste. You have to remove the degrees symbols for the search function to accept it.

Re: Google Earth - Cool places to visit

Stupid placement for buildings etc in my opinion... right in the middle of what aparently is a volcano?

21 15 42.68"N 157 48 21.06"W

I was looking for the Arizona Memorial, but it looks like it's a terrible picture of it... hopefully they will increase the quality, but the US military is probably restricting pictures from being taken of the area after Pearl Harbor...

21 21 53.58"N 157 57 0.17"W

That's absolutely stupid that they didn't include something simple that can be copied and pasted so that you can share with other Earth Googlers... Those bookmarks are cool, but too clunky...

Post Re: Google Earth - Cool places to visit

Don't know if you know already, but this is a neat feature of Google Earth...

If you go into layers and check the first box, "Keyhole community BBS", it places informational icons on the map that have been created by people on the web. So, for example, if you go to the Groom Lake coordinates posted upthread, you will see an "i" icon labeled "Area 51 updated and in color", click it then click the "more" link to a post that has a clearer shot of the area.

I think it's a cool idea for people to add places, but I found an airstrip that was mislabeled as area 51 and it hasn't been deleted.

Those strange symbols in the dessert are part of the Tonopah Test Range (http://www.dreamlandresort.com/info/tonopah.htm) probably targets for bombing training. Notice that using the measure tool in Google Earth that the triangular symbol is about 3/4 of a mile per side! The first F117 Stealth Figher squadron was based at Tonopah in 1984.

Thank you for the info Otto! I figured a couple of them were definitely bombing targets, but the one with the circle surrounding the sun-like design with the little squares around it seemed very strange to see.

I think that's some kind of mining pit. They dig down in spirals in order to leave a ramp back out. What other strange things have you found in Africa?

How about this:
Marshall Space Flight Center – or rather, the public rocket museum part, Huntsville, AL
34 42 40.19N 86 39 13.38W
(note the Saturn V on its side, and the Shuttle Pathfinder (http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/...athfinder.html)
