Re: Google Earth - Cool places to visit
Adak Island - worked here in '85 as a civilian contractor building a fuel tank farm - 2 - 3.5 million gallon tanks for JP5. The Navy flew P-3 Orions out of the base and had quite the radio eavesdropping facility here.
The base as since been closed and the facilities turned over to a native corporation.

There are six larger tanks right along the road - we built the first two as you come up the road from the fuel dock (located in the bay to the East)

"The Elephant Cage"
A large antenna - series of pole towers laid out in two rings - one inside the other IIRC
Seems like this might still be in use as it is the only thing I have seen on the Island which they have been compelled to "fuzz" out. Must still have some classification protection.

Low res - but this is Strong Point Hillman - position held up the Brits coming off Sword Beach on D-Day and is a part of the reason the British infantry did not reach the outskirts of Caen on June 6th.

Re: Google Earth - Cool places to visit
I haven't seen it myself, but I'd like to assume it's a graveyard.
It's more likely if they're all sat outside and some are not intact. People usually keep their expensive stuff in hangars.
The only place that aircraft won't rust or rot is in the nevada desert. There's one place airlines buy old commerical jets from and there are hundreds of them, not aged a bit.

Re: Google Earth - Cool places to visit

I went to a LAN in Orlando a few years ago and took a day to go tour the Space Center. I got the choice of the Space Shuttle tour or the "Classic" tour and I chose the latter, as I wanted to see all the old launch pads used in the history of space flight. It was an awesome experience. There were volunteers at some of the sites who had worked there back in the pre-space era who had wonderful stories to tell. There was a moment of silence at the pad where the Apollo fire occurred. There's an indoor exhibit of a complete Saturn 5 suspended in the air, and it's amusing to see the gaping jaws of visitors looking up at it. (I'd seen the one at the Houston Space Center and still found this one impressive.) And I cried at the memorial for those lost in the pursuit of the adventure, near the main entrance.
Photos from that tour:

The little convertible at the end is the rental I got to drive out there. I'd never driven a ragtop before and got the subcompact price.
