Re: Camel Spiders
In Somalia they were a pain in the ass. Not aggressive though. But they did like the salty moisture from your empty boots and clothing. We found them in some real weird places. The creepiest thing I saw was when I lifted a piece of plywood that had been lying around for awhile and lo and behold a Black Momba (SNAKE). Jesus, I freaked out and ran away screaming like a little girl. It was about 5 1/2 feet long and really pissed off. I returned with a can of Diesel and burnt the whole grid square.

Re: Camel Spiders
I have some pics of Camel Spiders from Afghanistan...I'll put em up here once I find em. Yesterday, the boys at the Water Point caught 3 Tarantulas and one Crab Spider. We brought them back to camp and fed the to our unofficial camp spider "Krusty"....Krusty is the size of and adult hand and viciously kills everything put into his cage.
Some pics of Krusty to follow...

Re: Camel Spiders
LOL... Krusty... great name. Nasty looking centipede you have there... I assume Krusty got a good meal?
We really enjoyed freezing the camel spiders in LOX (liquid oxygen for those that are about to ask) and throwing them really high in the air while I was in Saudi. The end result was quite explosive. They definitely aren't aggressive, but I wouldn't want to make one mad... the fangs on those things are serious.
Those black mambas on the other hand were things I REALLY shied away from. Good job dealing with one of those critters RYN. Nasty buggers. Ever tried to get one out of a landing gear wheel well? Not Fun! They seem to like hydraulic fluid for some reason and don't take kindly to being poked with sticks.

Re: Camel Spiders
Here is a picture I took of what I guess is a Tarantula in Sabah, Malaysia. The picture doesn't do it justice though, it looked a lot bigger in RL, especially when I got near it and it jumped about three foot in the air.

Re: Camel Spiders
Geez Ryn, I remember training down at FT Sherman Panama. We were moving along in ranger file and got to this little opening in a low area, The RTO Got within feet of a killer bee nest. He had alot of gear and was protected pretty well. Well the bees attacked him and he dropped to the ground, mind you pack and all on, and he jumped right up in an adrenaline rush and we(a 9 man squad) ran in every direction of the compass.

Re: Camel Spiders
That's how they hunt. They don't build webs to catch prey.
