    Messing around with GIMP

    Another forum I'm on was using the background of this image to make some wallpapers, so I messed around a bit in GIMP and made a TG one.



    Need to learn how to do some better text effects...

    Here is the background I used. Here is another color. Here is a Firefox one - guess it came from this page. Cool stuff.

    Nice work. I have Gimp on my HD but i haven't touched it and doubt i would understand how to do anything in it.

    Well, I use it like a free version of Photoshop. For my uses, it does pretty much the same things and can even open PSD files. And GIMP is a native Linux app and is free; Photoshop is neither. No brainer for me

    I can find plenty of photoshop tutorial sites out there and I'm able to follow most of them using GIMP. There seems to be less out there about GIMP though.

    Now that I've stayed up all night playing with Gimp, I'm ready to try some more stuff.. like improving the bleh text. If anyone else wants to play around, GimpTalk seems to be the place to go to get some Gimp tutorials.

    definitely, it can convert just about anything to just about anything else (including a bunch of formats i've never even heard of before)

    What would be really cool is that background but with the horizontal line removed. The tags would still be cool but a line free one would be awesome.

    Yep, that's the one thing it cannot do.

    Inkscape, another open source graphics program, can do that, I think. There is also Xnview, a nice open source Infranview clone that can convert images (including BMPs) on the fly.

    Other than that, GIMP is the roxxorz.

    Open a .BMP, the File->Save As or File->Save a Copy... window pops up asking compression (default is 85)...



    (maybe you mean batch-convert?)

    I'm still thinking 2.2.7. I haven't tried all the new goodies yet.

    Isn't it up to 2.2.10 now?

    Gimp can save as pcx, xwd, xpm, xbm, bmp, tif, tga, im1, sgi, ppm, ps, png, psd, pgm, ico, cel, jpg, html, xcf.gz, pat, xjt, gih, gbr, gif, fit, eps, dcm, h, c, colorxhtml, xcf.bz2, fli, pix, and xcf. Lots of stuff, most of which I've never heard of!

    Played around some more and got a nice 3d looking text, but then I closed my window and forgot to save. Doh!

    I followed a tutorial last night and made myself a little globe that I can put things in. Don't know what to put in it, but it looks pretty neat Lots to play with!

    New one I've been messing with. Took me forever to figure out how to do the fading effect of the grid in the top left corner. Still not sure I could explain it

    I like it good job. One of the better wallpapers ive seen. O i stole the Frefox one for my computer :P
