Re: I love hockey
We need to get a ongoing Hockey thread going throughout the remainder of the year. This year so far has been excellent, very exciting. Can't wait for the playoffs!

Re: I love hockey
I cant understand offsides in hockey, or how its so difficult for a fat goalie to defend a goal thats about an inch bigger then he is on both sides.

Re: I love hockey
Isn't it the same as indoor soccer? The puck/ball can only cross two lines before touching another player or else it's offsides? (basically)

Re: I love hockey
That's a two line pass. Where the puck/ball cannot travel over two lines during a pass. In indoor soccer it is "the ball can't travel in the air past two lines". Offsides in hockey is if a player crosses into the opposing team's defensive area (Inside the blue line) before the puck does. If they do they cannot touch the puck until they have come back out past the blue line.

Re: I love hockey
I know you are saying this tongue in cheek, but these guys are hardly fat, in fact they have excellent flexibility, reflexes etc. It is the hardest position in the game.

Re: I love hockey
The two-line pass rule disappeared this year in the NHL. In simplest terms, it just meant that you couldn't pass from your end to someone who was over the red centre line. Now you can pass as far as you want as long as the guy isn't offside.
Offside is very simple. A guy can't be in the opposing team's end (over the blue line) before the puck goes in, so you either have to carry it in or shoot it in ahead of everyone. You can't pass it in to someone who is there. The whistle goes as soon as someone from the team that went offside touches the puck. As of this year, they brought back the rule which says that offside will not be called if the team which goes offside clears ALL of their players from the opposing end before touching the puck. This keeps the game flowing faster, which is a good thing.
The only other offside detail is the "intentional offside". If the ref think that you shot the puck into the zone knowing that your team would be offside, he will whistle and stop the play immediately without waiting for anyone to touch the puck. Usually, a player would do this because they have no safe place to send the puck. Better to dump it into the end than to give up an odd-man rush in the other direction.Peace through fear... since 1947!

I love that this took place in Philadelphia... you can hear the screams of the fans in the background. Philadelphia has a reputation of having the meanest, most brutal fans in the country (they are the only city to boo and throw ice balls at Santa at an Eagles game).
But seriously, that was freakin' awesome.--------
Zephyr: Besides Wyzcrak and his godly voice; the kind of voice that you will expect to say "Zephyr, I need you to build an ark at Marine Start, with room for two of every structure so that I may turret spam for 40 days and 40 nights" that is.
Squeak:Sometimes I'm awed by zibs genius. Then I remember he's Canadian and I feel significantly less threatened.

Re: I love hockey
Ah, well, that's just like offsides in regular soccer, except that it's the offsides line or a second defender, whichever is closer to the goal.

Re: I love hockey
Now that i understand the hockey offsides, i can safely say the Soccer offsides is a lot more confusing to more people. Too many details to it.

Re: I love hockey
Not that detailed...its like the hockey offisde but with a dynamic blue line (in this case its the last defender back.) However, in soccer when the ball was passed does matter. As long as you are onsides when the ball was kicked you can receive the pass past the last defender. I guess it does seem a bit confusing but it comes down to timing and the aptitude of the linesmen.

Re: I love hockey
Ah, I should have just directed you to rule 74.
I was going to add that it is a little confusing when a player gets spun around at the blue line and they go in backwards. They can indeed put themselves offside because it is the position of their skates which matters when the puck goes over the line.Peace through fear... since 1947!

Re: I love hockey
I honestly still watch this clip once a day. It really doesnt get any better. I dont think WWE has ever had a better brawl. I have even picked up on a few things during the fight. First with the choice of music. If you listen its timed almost perfectly to when the announcer says "here we go" everything just comes together at once and you almost feel the place errupt. Second, while zoomed in on the fight you see the Lalime say to Esche when they are tangled up on the boards "Yo, I dont want to fight". Its almost like they just scrapped it up to be a part of something and didnt want to stand there while everyone else threw down. Yea, I might be tooting my own horn but hockey is sweet and Im glad its back.
