    Astronomy Picture of the Day

I haven't seen this posted but I'm sure many of you have seen this site before. For those who haven't, Astronomy Picture of the Day by NASA is just that. Every day there is "a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer". I found this site about six months ago and ever since it is the first site I visit every morning when I fire up my PC. Whenever I want to feel grounded, I search the archives and am quickly reminded of my place in the universe. Here's today Hi-res image, a rare photo of a distant galaxy looking right on its edge. I hope you enjoy:

Zephyr: Besides Wyzcrak and his godly voice; the kind of voice that you will expect to say "Zephyr, I need you to build an ark at Marine Start, with room for two of every structure so that I may turret spam for 40 days and 40 nights" that is.

Squeak:Sometimes I'm awed by zibs genius. Then I remember he's Canadian and I feel significantly less threatened.

Sometimes they are. If they do, they usually tell you in the description. Every now and then they'll put in an artist's conception drawing as well - but again, they tell you when.

Those are amazing Loyal. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Astronomy Picture of the Day

    Wow...check out today's!

Explanation: What's happened to the Sun? Sometimes it looks like the Sun is being viewed through a large lens. In the above case, however, there are actually millions of lenses: ice crystals. As water freezes in the upper atmosphere, small, flat, six-sided, ice crystals might be formed. As these crystals flutter to the ground, much time is spent with their faces flat, parallel to the ground. An observer may pass through the same plane as many of the falling ice crystals near sunrise or sunset. During this alignment, each crystal can act like a miniature lens, refracting sunlight into our view and creating phenomena like parhelia, the technical term for sundogs. The above image was taken during early 2006 February near Helsinki, Finland with a quickly deployed cellular camera phone. Visible in the image center is the Sun, while two bright sundogs glow prominently from both the left and the right. Also visible is the 22 degree halo also created by sunlight reflecting off of atmospheric ice crystals.

    Star Clouds over Arizona

Explanation: The clouds in the foreground are much different than the clouds in the background. In the foreground are a photogenic deck of Earth-based water clouds. The long exposure used to create the above photograph makes the light from the left, reflected from Phoenix, Arizona, USA, appear like a sunset. Far in the distance, however, are star clouds from the disk of our Milky Way Galaxy. Billions of stars like our Sun live there, circling our Galactic center every 200 million years. Contrast between the water clouds and the star clouds has been digitally enhanced. Between the two, visible on the upper right, is the planet Jupiter.
