Just caught a rather large spider in my living room...

    Large pics:

So, what kind of spider is this? I know the pics aren't in focus, but all I have right now is a point and shoot that insists on focusing on the wall of my son's bug catcher.

My first thought was, "<Gasp> Look at his back, there's a Brown Recluse in my house!" Then I looked closer and the markings on his back are not in the shape of a fiddle. This looks like a common, harmless (but mean looking!) Wolf Spider to me.

I should've put a quarter in there for size comparison. He was decent sized. I'd say that the diameter of his legs was definitely greater than 3 inches.

Out of my years lived in texas, don't think I've ever seen that one. I've seen many of them too. Maybe some kind of field spider. Just run when you see a black widow, or fiddle back, I've been bittin by a fiddle back before, and its not pretty.

*edit, actually does it look anything like this spider http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...3Doff%26sa%3DG

It looks very similar. The markings on his butt are much more distinct than that one, but the overall look is the same. I took note of the eyes last night, and those are the same, but I guess all Wolf Spiders have eyes like that...

I am a large, full-grown adult man, neither hero nor coward - but if I found that in my living room I would be turned instantly into a 10 year old girl.

I'm always amused and turn into an evil little imp when I find out that someone is afraid of spiders.

I should've taken a picture of this spider sitting in my hand...

Edit: It seems that Huntsmens are inclined to inhabit tropical climes, and I don't think that North Texas qualifies as that. Along with photos from Wikipedia, I'm fairly certain that this isn't a Huntsman.

Oh, I've seen them before, but not this large, and that was before I was interested in what species it was...

I had a pet tarantula when I was in Tucson. Bought crickets for it to eat. Later let the tarantula go out near Santa Rita High School and let the last couple of crickets go in the back yard. We had a cricket infestation until we moved out of that house...

Last time I smashed a spider, 1,000 of babies came out and ran everywhere, was the sickest thing ever. Made my aunt jump on top of her computer desk.
