Re: Desktop's 2006
Yeah that can be a pain. You can always change the wallpaper for your different virtual desktops (depending on the distro of course).

Re: Desktop's 2006
If you're talking about his quick launch bar. First make sure it's on (right click taskbar -> properties -> check "show quick launch"). Now right click the taskbar and make sure "Lock the taskbar" is not checked. This should allow you to drag the whole taskbar, or bits and pieces of it around your desktop (also allows resizing).

Re: Desktop's 2006
That one is called Object Dock. You can find it at http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/
They make all sorts of neat programs to customize your windows environment. The main difference between the trial and full software version is that the full allows you to have multiple bars on the screen.
The couple other things on my desktop come from Yahoo Widget Engine (formerly known as Konfabulator).

Re: Desktop's 2006
It's pretty simple actually, first right click on the desktop, then goto "arrange icons by" and uncheck "show desktop icons" or whatever.
Then right click on your taskbar, make sure its unlocked first. Then go up to "Toolbars" and click "desktop" this should add "desktop" thing in your taskbar now. Now if your taskbar is unlocked, you should be able to drag this onto the desktop, it will appear to be a square box window at first. Now you'll want to move the box to the left side of the screen, and it will automatically dock to the side of the screen. All you'll need to do now is resize it a bit to where only the icons show up. Also, to get rid of the text, right click and disable "show text" & "show title" volia!|TG-12th|Undead

Re: Desktop's 2006
Stardock makes some pretty neat stuff to custimize Windows, and Yahoo Widget Engine is nice too but I found that though they work great when I'm doing simple tasks like internet browsing and email, they can really slow things down when I play games (at least newer games... They make playing Oblivion very unpleasant). I used to use ObjectDock to access all of my frequently used programs (I'm impatient with computers, so the Start menu is simply not an option) but it would sometimes minimize programs that were running in fullscreen mode if you got the mouse near the top of the screen. So in FPS games like UT2004, ObjectDock + Looking up = DEAD. Then I started using the "LaunchIt" widget in the Yahoo Widget Engine to open up programs quickly. It was pretty good, but again, leaving it running in games caused problems. The widgets seem to like reading lots of stuff off the hard drive at inconvient times so they can cause some nasty FPS drops when the video card is trying to load textures. Now I use a program called Bayden Slickrun. It's very similar the widget I was using but it's much more effecient and it does more too. It works like the Run window but it's faster and you have to type only a few letters of the program you want. You can turn it into a clock when you're not using it too.
Anyways..... here's my desktop, or at least what it looks like at the moment. I change it all the time. I had a dark theme with a nice Quake Wars wallpaper, but I'm trying not to think too much about ETQW, hoping that the wait will seem shorter.

Everything I need is in the quick-launch type thing at the top of the screen. Keeps my desktop nice and clean.
