May be building a PC, need some advice.

Hello fellow members of TG, as you may know, I run PS2 off of my laptop (Nvidia 630m, dual core i5, 8 gigs ram, 500g 5400rpm hd). Performance is fairly lackluster on it; while I can easily get 40-50 fps in the warpgate or on amerish in the mornings, I struggle to get above 20fps in the midst of intense fight on very low (all settings low, render quality 75%, shadows and flora off).

To rid my self of this annoyance, the thought of building a pc has crossed my mind. I have the budget of around $600 for the desktop and $200 for the monitor and desk. Here is my setup I'm thinking of getting atm:

    CPU: AMD A10-5800K ($110)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Motherboard: MSI Socket FM2 Motherboard ($60)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Case: Thermaltake V3 Black AMD Edition Gaming Chassis Mid Tower Steel ($40)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Cooling: 3 Coolermaster case fans ($27)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

PS: Corsair Builder Series CX 600 Watt ($66)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Optical Drive: Asus 24xDVD-RW Serial ATA Internal OEM Drive ($22)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...A1H9NMCPZH97BO

GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 650 Ti OC 2GB GDDR5 ($150)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Monitor: ViewSonic VX2270SMH-LED 22-Inch IPS LED Monitor ($130)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

RAM: Kingston Hyper X Blu 8 GB ($58)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Hard Drive: WD Blue 1 TB Desktop Hard Drive ($66)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Desk: Atlantic 33935701 Gaming Desk ($99)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

    GRAND TOTAL: $830

Here are all the parts I'm thinking of getting. I already have mouse, headset, etc... but other than that, is there anything I'm missing?! This would be my first time building a pc so I'm not sure where to buy parts, right now I'm thinking of amazon due to no tax/free shipping.

If you have any comments, suggestions, changes you would make, or ways to get similar performance for cheaper (mowing neighbors lawns isn't exactly a get-rich-quick-scheme), please leave them below.

    Thanks,

    Agent Pen.

If there is anyway to squeeze a SSD in the mix I would. SSD (Solid State Drive) will load your operation system faster and if you have room to put PS2 on it then it will load all drive accessible material for it faster.

Re: May be building a PC, need some advice.

Ive been with AMD for the past 8 year and i always love it BUT for PlanetSide 2 im willing to change like really soon i got a six core 2.80Ghz and it's blocking me for getting more then 40 fps in the warpgate and in big fight i often play at 14 fps if not lower specially on indar. One of my friend got the SAME setup as me BUT he got a i5(quad core) instead of the 6 core AMD and he got like 80 fps in warpgate and 60 in big fight. So since you are playing ALOT of PS2 i suggest you to switch to a i5. I know it cost like the double but if you got 20 fps in big battle you maybe want to take a bit more time to save more money and buy bigger.

Get a real desk on Craigslist near you for probably $20 and it will be much sturdier than that little thing. Then add the money saved back into buying components.

Oh and I wanted to add that large suppliers like Newegg or Tiger Direct might have the same parts lower in price including shipping. Unless the laws in the States have changed since I left, if you live in a state other than the state the company resides in then there shouldn't be any sales tax. There are some exceptions of course. And I agree with Randy.......get a real desk and try to stay away from the 'gimmicky' stuff.

Re: May be building a PC, need some advice.

I wouldn't go with that AMD APU. It's only a quad-core, similar to the FX-4300. There's nothing wrong with it being quad-core, it's just the AMD's cores are about half as "good" (IPC) as Intel's.

Hannibal: I do agree that Intel CPUs are better for the time being (until the AMD optimization patches). However, with a $600 budget you won't be able to fit in an i5 + a decent graphics card.

    CPU: FX-8320

    Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2P

Case: Same as yours except it's $30 on Newegg. I do recommend this case. I have the red AMD version and I love it.

PSU: COOLMAX ZX Series ZX-500 500W

GPU: MSI Radeon HD 7950 3GB

RAM: Kingston HyperX XMP Blu Red Series 8GB

HDD: WD Blue 500GB 7200 RPM

It's $590 + a $40 MIR, which you can use to get fans + an optical drive. I picked all the parts off Newegg, but I can't post the links since I'm a new member apparently.

Re: May be building a PC, need some advice.

Thank-you to all who have responded. Winter is coming, drivers training is coming, and my lawn mowing is decreasing; more money to spend, less to save. Therefore, I will probably be delayed for a while in buying a PC

Rage and Randy: you are absolutely right, buying a real desk is a must.

Hannibal: Thanks for pointing that out, I don't want to dump the cash and still get meager performance.

Arma: Thank-you for the mock setup, much appreciated. What fps in game do you think I can come to expect with the 8320 + 7950?

I'm late to the party, but I strongly recommend purchasing an aftermarket CPU cooler combined with a quality thermal paste like Arctic Silver ($8).

Aftermarket coolers are pretty cheap (most run around $30), but the performance increase from that you can obtain from a modest 35% - 40% overclock is staggering.

Re: May be building a PC, need some advice.

I just posted this in the BF4 forum to help the guys who may be building for that game. I've studied the benchmarks of all these things vs their AMD counterparts, and all competition in the market, and unless you're willing to spend more on better items, this is the best system you can build for your money with a budget of around 1000 bucks. I only have one 120 mm fan running in my case and the side off of it and it NEVER stutters...

With that being said, I can't run BF4 on ultra settings without microfreezing on explosions. I run Auto which sets everything to high (can't remember what the AA is set to, but trust me, the game is gorgeous.) Just based off the games that are coming out today, and what you will want to play over the next few years, I ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANYTHING LESS THAN THE FOLLOWING:

... and the crown on top of the system
MSI GTX GeForce 650 Ti Boost Twin Frozr 3 2 gb gddr5 - this thing is a FREAKING BEAST
Playing on my 42 in LG LCD TV with a track ball and Microsoft LifeChat 3000 (I think) headset

All in all, it's an epic experience. I don't think I can set everything to mega super ultra combo on graphics settings, but I can get pretty close.

Hope this helps for anyone thinking about upgrades. The 650 ti boost tf3 is a little better than the gtx 660, according to benchmarks, so if you're considering a new card or even SLI, I'd recommend either the 650 ti boost tf3 from MSI or a GTX 660 Ti Boost (pretty sure they have those) or better.
I absolutely under no circumstances would ever recommend any AMD processor in the current market. The fact of the matter is that spending more on an Intel will get you double if not triple the processing power for ANY AMD available, regardless of cores. The consensus, according to about 30 hours of research on the subject (cuz trust me, the prices were sexy for AMD and I REALLY wanted to save the money) is that more cores does not have the same effect as better architecture. Intel realized this, and began building epic bridges (Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge) as opposed to just throwing more cores in their processors. I've always liked Intel over AMD, but I assure you that I gave AMD serious consideration while building this PC (finished it last month) and it simply doesn't compare. There is no AMD processor on the market that even comes close to the new Haswell i7's. In fact, I'm pretty sure (if I remember correctly) that the i5-3570k overclocked to 4.0 ghz is on par with the top-of-the-line-most-expensive-there-is AMD on benchmarks.

The above system cost me around $1.5k and I bought it all for decent deals from Tigerdirect.com ... got some rebates in the process.

With the above system, I run Starcraft 2, Natural Selection 2, and Planetside 2 all on ultra settings. Again, the only thing I've ran into that I can't run on Ultra is the BF4 beta. And I still have room to OC my processor, and SLI another 650 Ti Boost... which will basically make my computer be able to teleport me to space at this point...

Re: May be building a PC, need some advice.

And just to help you out a bit more... considering your budget...

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...009&CatId=4910 - I wouldn't recommend this mobo, but that's an i5 system that only needs about another... 300 bucks to be close to the system I have. Add a MSI 650 ti boost tf3 and 4 more gigs of ram to it, and it's the same system for... $479 with an $80 rebate plus //www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7884055&CatId=7387 this card plus 4 more gigs of RAM comes out to be about $700 to estimate on the safe side.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...890&CatId=4910 -- Pretty sure this is the mobo I'm running. It's got the i5 3570k with it. I've got a bigger PSU and a different case and I don't even have a DVD or CD drive in mine... but I have the same case fan. My RAM is a different name brand, but Patriot has some good reviews... and I have 4 more gigs of it... it is the same speed as mine, tho... $499 with a $60 rebate plus the MSI GTX 650 ti boost and 4 more gigs of ram comes out to be around $750 to estimate on the safe side.

The only problem you may run in to is that I think it only has one PCI 3.0 slot in it, and it's located at the very bottom of the board... so my case has the PSU mounted on the bottom which means that my GTX 650 sits RIGHT BESIDE my PSU in the only 3.0 slot on the board (I may be wrong... I think it has 2 3.0 slots for SLI, not sure tho) but it works well for me.

I hope this helps. I think my mobo is a different model but it's definitely a Z77.

    Mom... again.

Ah... add $90 to those numbers for Windows 7 Home Premium (also recommend this OS over the rest... I like Windows 8, but it's just a spoofed up version of Windows 7... think Windows ME or Vista... they were just different versions of the OS before them).
