PS3 Bluray Laser Dead
My PS3 all of a sudden will not read bluray discs (games or movies). I did a little searching and it seems like it's not exactly an uncommon problem. The thing is that when my wife bought it for me she paid cash and did not keep the receipt...am I just screwed?!?

Where did you buy it? If you used a place like best buy and have their rewards club card, they might be able to look it up for you.

I think you're pretty much screwed on this one. Repairs can be pretty cheap if you do it yourself. The replacement laser is about $50-60. I don't know how difficult the replacement work is. If you get Sony to do it, it's 2 or 3 times that cost. They definitely need the receipt to do the warranty claim though.

A non-warranty drive replacement through Sony runs about $150, last time somebody I know went through one.

Re: PS3 Bluray Laser Dead
So last night I ran a format on my hard drive. It's part of the steps before shipping your unit in to Sony (I finally scrapped the money together). The next morning just before putting it in the box I decided to try a bluray one more time...BOOM...works fine.
So I lost all my data and saves, but I gained $150. NICE!!!
