As a fighter pilot i can tell you the worst thing you can do is let me get a straight shot on your tail. Its harder to hit a helo when its moving perpendicular to a jet, the missles tend to miss for some reason. Now if ive got a straight shot at your tail its over unless you have flares.

OK, so... I don't quite know how the camera missle can manuever in-flight. I thought once you fire it, you jsut wiggle your mouse around in th edirection you want it to go. So, when in-flight, you CLICK on a target and it diverts to that location?... And if it's a moving target, you go 'click click click click!' as it moves about until you hit it?

I'm pretty good with the cannon, but I dissapoint my pilots when my camera missles don't hit anything

Yeah, that's the great thing about hellfire missiles!! THEY HIT EVERYTHING...if you are fast enough. As I wrote you only have 1-2 seconds, but you donīt have to 'click, click, click' so much. Just once when you see the target, even if it is moving. Nothing in BF2 moves fast enough to escape a Hellfire. 'wiggling' your mouse around is not going to make the missile change much direction...sorry man

But again: the power of the Hellfire and its little TV is that the chopper can take out targets from a great distance, and even targets that the gunner has no visual contact with...but it reguires that the gunner knows the maps played - GOOD LUCK!

Oooo I had not thought of trying that, I suppose if you know there is a target in an area thanks to an UAV/teammate then you can fire away. Will need to give that a go, although I'd imagine it takes fast reactions as those missiles don't exactly hang around!

    Re: Helocopter Do's & Dont's...

I click-and-hold to fire and drag.
I find it easier than clickclickclick, but I also don't take blind shots. Either my pilot gets me a shot or we reposition. I don't know the maps well enough to guess where there's a target, and it seems to make more of a difference to the groundpounders if I'm actually taking out "real" threats instead of fishing for them.

I wish I did know the maps that well, but I don't, so I stick to the targets I can see.

Phelan_Ward has mastered this. I played with him lastnight and he used it to fantastic effect.

    I have a question:

    - When people make Air Squads, are they including helicopters (attack / transport) in that or just the fixed wings?

Also check out Pelan Wards thread:

    http://www.tacticalgamer.com/pr-bf2-tactics-sops/56854-guide-attack-helicopters-missle-sniping.html

He also recomends what he refers to as "missile sniping". This missile sniping thing i really great even if don't know the map. Sniping can also be used for taking out vehicles that grunts have called out on the map or who have been detected by the UAV. Just position the chopper in the right direction, fire away and then have your fingertip reactions ready for clicking!

But an example of effective missile sniping could be on the Oman map. The three outer flags are constantly under attack, and good way to secure them without to many casualties is asking the pilot to stay low a small distance from the hangarship. Then you mop up the AA sites by missile sniping, take out any tanks and APCīs to protect the grunts and then you safely move in an take out the rest with the cannon while grunts clear up the enemies you missed. It can be a real pain for the pilot when he has to dodge both AA, APC and anti-tank infantry incoming fire, so taking aout this beforehand is highly recomended.

They shouldn't. It's ok to put all jets in one squad, but don't mix the helos and jets.
You should specify your squad like this:

    Jets or FixedWing or FastMover
    AttackHelo
    BH or TxportHelo

    Re: Helocopter Do's & Dont's...

    Other heli stuff:
Armor (tanks and APCs) guns can only be lifted somuch.
This means that you're quite safe from their guns at certain heights, but then you're just itching to be spotted by enemy AA or aircraft.
If you're low, it's the opposite: AA gets obstructed by trees, hills, objects. (try and fly towards low areas such as water, AA can't go below horizon) but then you can attract attention from armor.
You're safest IMO while hugging the ground, but it requires some skill.
It's best to fly fast, skimming between trees and other stuff, that way if an enemy tank does pop over that hill he'll have a hard time gunning you down.
Note that wires aren't physical, so you can fly straight through, but anything else acts like a brick wall, including signs. (They'll have to rig tanks with bunches of those ducktaped if they want to cheat and win all wars)

Use the old pop-up methods. (ahh, where's the old C64 gunship)
Again, use your surroundings. And especially know where all those pesky AA mounts are, so you can even have your gunner send a candygram from a distance if someone decides to 'camp' an AA.

    Re: Helocopter Do's & Dont's...

    Helo advice:

    1. Don't get anywhere near your target area before your gunner has cleaned out the vehicles. Give him 2 minutes at stand-off range to remove the heavy metal, esp AAA.

    2. Don't insist on getting rocket shots. "Doing the dip" to aim your crosshair at the ground causes your helo to move forward, causing your gunner's stable firing platform to become unstable - meaning he can't hit squat. Also, that moves you closer to or right over the danger zone.
-- Closer to: where your gunner can fire TV missiles, but doesn't have enough correction opportunities to hit squat
-- Right over: where your gunner has targets all around him instead of all in one forward fire arc. You will get downed by small arms fire and grenades. Shame on you. You deserve it - all that stand-off firepower and you squandered it.

    3. Don't get in mid-air knife-fights with enemy helos. Helos are just not the best weapon to take out another helo. Stay on your mission. Ignore it totally if it will let you. The problem is, the OTHER helo probably hasn't read this post.

    4. Do pop-up over a ridge/bldg/tree, let the gunner send off a missile, and drop back down. Staying behind enemy lines like this, preventing locks, and often preventing even being spotted, making it hard for jets to find you, is a REALLY wicked way to use the Attack Helo's awesome firepower to great advantage to support your troops by taking big chunks out of enemy armor. Back there, it's also easy to land and have the support gunner jump out and rearm you.

    Re: Helocopter Do's & Dont's...

One word of advice to all you ace chopper pilots. It's pretty easy to find an empty server and practice flying. It's a lot harder to get in practice time as the gunner as you need a good pilot willing to fly you around being less than 100% effective. I've been lucky enough on two occasions now to have found such patient souls. Those TV guided missles definately take the most time to learn. I've been a dedicated gunner for 3 complete rounds and I'm still not comfortable with them, but after reading this thread I think I know what I was doing wrong. I thought you clicked once to fire them and then used the mouse to steer. From reading here if I do the one click to fire, I have to click again on the target to change direction, or hold the button down the whole time and try to steer that way. Do I have it right?
