Re: Tips on shooting?
I mostly play sniper (if we are assaulting, I switch off to another class after I die). It's a skill, like flying.

Sniping isn't about staying in one place, nor is it all about long range kills. It's about supporting the team, by scouting out threats, counter-sniping, and covering them on the assualt.
A sniper who stays in one place is a dead sniper.

Re: Tips on shooting?
The bullets have trajectory so you have to correct depending on the distance and relative height to your target. There are no absolutes to the corrections, they're always minor corrections but they make a big difference since the targets are small.
Only use the sights when you're prepared to fire slowly and take your time with the shot. If you spam your shots you'll be worse off then if you didn't use them.
Change up your rate of fire once in a while so you'll get a feel for the effects of recoil.
Assault Rifles - Don't fire the M16 too fast. It's more accurate then the AK but spamming bursts is going to be worse then spamming full auto. So take your time and capitalize on the accuracy advantage.
Carbines - Just like Assault Rifles but less damage and accuracy. Like the Assault Rifles the Carbines are good at most ranges (just not as good as a rifle) and only looses effectiveness at sniper ranges.
SMGs - Low power and accuracy. I tend to treat them like shotguns; if I can't hit it with a shotgun I use my pistol instead of the SMG.
SAWs - With the sights you can get some decent accuracy by shooting bursts or just one shot at a time and then waiting about a second to shoot again. It's a suppression weapon so at some point you need to just put out ammunition.
Pistols - With SAWs and SMGs whenever accuracy becomes and range starts to become a major factor switch to your pistol. Use the sights and fire slowly at those times.

Re: Tips on shooting?
If you set your mouse sensitivity, you should reset it back to 1.0. I had it set to 4.9, I liked small movements with the mouse so I didn't have to move it a lot. Rather than it adjusting a sensitivity, it just multiplies how many pixels the center of the screen will jump per mouse movement. So 1.0 is where you need it to be able to accurately aim at long range.

Re: Tips on shooting?
keep in mind that when your ROF picks up your iron sight is not indicative of where your bullet is going. EA seems fond of using both a cone of fire AND an iron sight system, so the more you fire the more accuracy is taken off of your shot, even tho the iron sight doesn't move around that much.
a easy way to see this in action is firing at a wall in full auto using a spec-op's red dot sight.|TG-Irr|Legato

Re: Tips on shooting?
The tip of the iron sight is not always where to aim. (For example: pistols) Switch in and out of the zoom mode and you can mentally match where the "crosshair" is when you use your iron sight.
I do believe using the zoom mode improves your single shot accuracy. Also there is accuracy improvements for using single shot vs. burst or full auto (and firing 1 round).

Re: Tips on shooting?
I noticed one wierd thing (can someone confirm this?):
I line my sight perfectly aiming at the upper torso of a standin still target (noobie trying to shoot me while I'm in prone position and have two medpacks under myself, haha) - and shoot single shot and nothing! You can tell by not having an X-mark confirmation. I do the same thing again, this time 100% positive that I'm gonna hit him in his dog-tags right under his neck, and again a miss!
Next shot I aimed at his right shoulder, and got the X. Shot 2 more quick ones at the right shoulder and he dropped dead.
This is something I'm saying to all my noobie friends: If you're not getting X thingy, you're doing nothing! It doesn't matter how many bullets you fired, it's useless. And if you're not getting an X when shooting in his head or torso, try aiming a little to the left or right, till you get it - then fire several shots at the same place.
btw, it's amazing how your ability to shoot a target increases with the time you spend playing bf2... not like bf... At the begining I couldn't kill a guy 20+m away from me. Now it's nice suprprise when I shoot someone running from cover to cover some 150m with couple of quick singleshots (with like 50%+ efficiency), even thou he starts jumping when I hit him the first time... sweet.

Re: Tips on shooting?
Another way to improve your aim is to improve your perception of the recoil of your fire. In most situations, short bursts or single shots will provide the best accuracy per shot. Often times, in close or mid range fighting, I find you won't have the luxury of waiting waiting for recoil to settle down. Remember that every gun kicks in an upward direction due to recoil. So, just like other games with recoil physics, slowly and slightly lower your aim downward to compensate.
Hopefully, your initial few bursts will take out the enemy, but combat isn't always that ideal. I've found that using this tactic provides a great advantage when fighting prone against a mid-range prone enemy holding a position to provide a small target zone.
People also underestimate the value of movement when shooting. Shoot, move laterally a few meters, shoot again. Movement and amazingly the ability to dodge is vastly underrated in this game, especially in close combat. The ability to out-maneuver an opponent and gain better position provides more frags than you might think, especially in the infantry based maps like sharqi, karkand, and mashtuur.
