Re: Tank Artillery Fire
Why? Read the definition.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_superiority
Air superiority is defined in the NATO Glossary as "That degree of dominance in the air battle of one force over another that permits the conduct of operations by the former and its related land, sea, and air forces at a given time and place without prohibitive interference by the opposing force."
In short, it is a description of the military environment as to the level of control a force has for air operations.
High control / little interference - Air superiority
U do realize that it takes more than 1 tank round to kill either a transport or an attack helo right? And that the tank shifts with each round. And at long range, you'd have to calculate trajectory, even if he just moves a bit.......... you'll miss (especially with the think fuselage of the AH) If the pilot is good, he can get away before the 2nd one arrives.
Dont try to make a tactic out of errand luck.Reminds me of an ancient proverb.
A old farmer sees a bunny running into a tree by chance, and got himself a fat dinner. So for the rest of the year, he sat there waiting for another bunny. Guess what? when harvest time came, he starved.
Cookies for u if you can make it work. But most likely, you be AT bait or arty fodder waaay before that.Power may grow from the barrel of a gun, but control....... stems from the 1st and the 15th.

Using a tank as artillery
This might have been tested out before here at TG, did a quick search but found nothing.
Anyway, yesterday me and a friend tested a tank as artillery on D. Oilfield (empty LAN server).
The shell reaches between 850 and 900 meters before it burns out/disintegrates wich is roughly about 2/3 accross the map.
One of us would get in position as SL and mark the target with a “move here” command and the tank would start to fire on the yellow arrow. SL would give directions until the shell successfully hit. It worked pretty well and we got a decent hit after 4-6 rounds. Pretty good fun watching the incoming shells. When the gunner learn how much to elevate the cannon based on meters to the yellow arrow I think he will need less rounds to hit.
After experimenting a little more we found that by parking the tank next to the corner of a wall or a fence it was pretty easy to learn references as how to aim the cannon to hit into a jet hangar or a chopper platform from 850 meters. We managed to get 2 out of 3 hits on the attack chopper in US-main without much practice, all the way from the west-most CP. The chopper was just for practice, the technique may be used against any target …
If perfected I think it would be possible to use this tactic with one spotter and one gunner. The tank should probably be positioned under concealment to avoid being bombed. The tank-driver could easily learn about ballistics from several concealments and what strategic targets possible to hit. The spotter should also know where to direct fire based on where the tank is positioned.
If nothing else it is fun to explore and might give a little variation in tactic.

Hi Mishkan,
Even if we never use the tactic it sounds like fun to fire big guns and play around with targeting. PM me if you want to give it a try on an empty server somewhere...
I recall on a couple of occaisions sitting in a tank by the village on Zatar and lobbing shells as a suppressive fire tactic onto the refinery while another unit went on a flanking attack to their rear...worked like a charm as I recall.|TG-1st|Grunt

Re: Tank Artillery Fire
I too would like to practice this. Just let me know ahead of time what, when, and where.

Re: Tank Artillery Fire
@Bommando
English is not my native language so I might have spelled "thank" in stead of "tank" while searching, anyways tank for pointing it out.
Later
Think I did read somewhere that the next patch will fix a bug that make the tank-shell not render properly. We did notice that some shells just disapeared even in the middle of a wolley where we had narrowed in on the target.
It was also hard to see the shells if the sky was bright so it was best to spot from a location with a relativly dark backdrop.

Re: Tank Artillery Fire
I've seen it done, this is a video of a clan and it is from in a clanmatch. He probably uses pixel aiming.
It's a long video, and large, high quality. There is one such tank shot in it. It is a nice video though and worth the download to me. You can see how good clan players play in competition. Off course this involves quite a lot of bunny's and dolphins, but some things are interesting, like the way the chopper flies when it snipes rockets. And there are some really amazing killstreaks on it.
Here is their site, there are several links in the news section on january 30th.
