Re: helicopter flying tips?
posting as a beginner with choppers;
I had tried lots of time to fly them before. For some reason, I never realised you could pretty much let go of the throttle and hover. It sounds silly, after all thats what choppers do, but I think my braing was just thinking no power = droping like stone A'la aeroplanes, so I would try to learn chopper flying with almost max throttle and mouse sensitivity at default!
As soon as I realised that, practise sessions became productive!
After an hour or so, I'm fairly confident I can get the thing around the battlefield, land and repair, not crash, generally point in usefull directions for gunners.
What happens when people are actually on the field and shooting at me though.. dunno yet ;P

Re: helicopter flying tips?
The only time I ever have throttle at max is if I'm desperately trying to outclimb another chopper or if I am desperately trying to evade one. In general, you seem to lose a _lot_ of control and your helo becomes far more sensitive at 100% throttle. I usually cruise at about 40-50%, 70-80ish if I'm in a hurry.so I would try to learn chopper flying with almost max throttle
I know what happens to me... I tend to panic, over-throttle, over-steer, over-compensate, etc. It takes some serious conscious effort for me to maintain control of my instincts to really wrench that baby around. When I can maintain control of my instincts, I'm able to maintain control of the helicopter much better and usually survive. What happens when people are actually on the field and shooting at me though.. dunno yet
Basically, the biggest difference between practicing alone or in coop mod(e) and a "real" game is : Don't Panic. I'd like to mod the little red graphic that comes up when someone gets a missile lock on me to actually be a big round red button that says "Don't panic".

Re: helicopter flying tips?
well, ifly the helo with mouse and keyboard, because it reacts slower, and i use the joystick for jets. but the key with me is to use my mw518 mouse, because it has these + and - keys above and below the scroll wheel so i can adjust my sensitivity in different grades from very high to very low so i ve go one for infantry, one for flying a chopper and one for chopper aircombat
and i don't know why, but everyone says 70 - 80 % throttle, but i allways fly full throttle with a chopper, ist just a habit of mine, and not to brag, but im pretty proficiant with the chopper, atleast i think

Re: helicopter flying tips?
I've heard people saying that they keep throttle at about 50% to 70% but how do you keep it at this, can you press + or - to select a certain throttle? As all I do is press W to throttle up but it goes straight up to 100% and when I let go it goes all the way down to 0%. How do you stay at a constant throttle say 70%?

Re: helicopter flying tips?
Press the W key repeatedly instead of holding it down once you get to your desired throttle. It's a pain in the ass, but it works.

Re: helicopter flying tips?
Just a few things that help me:
1. Don't forget to use the negative collective while you're flying around. Practice with it and test out what it does when you're doing turns and dives, it can really help with control. Usually if I'm diving at a target I'm holding down my W key, it slows me down and gives me more control in a dive.
2. If you absolutely must use rockets, just start firing very slowly as you approach your target and adjust your aim accordingly, then when one of them hits unload the rest. It only takes like 4 rockets to take out tanks, and you have a lot more than that to fire, so don't be afraid to miss with a couple.
3. A quick way i've found to pull a 180 is to roll and pitch up at the same time. Mid manuver you're nose should be pointing at the ground, stop you're roll and throttle down while pulling up, and voila, you're looking behind you.
And besides that just practice, practice.

Re: Why are helicopters so hard to fly?
My suggestions:
- always make slight adjustments as you fly
- try keyboards only, with your right hand on the arrow keys
- practice with the big choppers first
- try with F10 view a little bit so you get an idea of how it looks when you are moving around
And most importantly, search this forum for a thread on how to fly. I think it's already been covered.Peace through fear... since 1947!

Re: Why are helicopters so hard to fly?
Start with the blackhawks and transport choppers, thy're much easier to fly. Once you've got hold of that move on to the attack choppers. Other than that just practice.

Re: Why are helicopters so hard to fly?
No, joysticks suck for helis. I can always tell when someone is flying with a joystick because the helicopter fly really slugishly. Esspecially in turns, and if you are going to play on TG servers you better be able to turn fast and do rolls to avoid TV missle shots.

Re: Why are helicopters so hard to fly?
Perhaps a bit more infomation could help, while i'm not an all-world pilot I can put up a good fight against most pilots so will offer any advice i can, but without knowing the actual problem its hard to offer specific help.
do you have problems hovering? turning sharply? moving sideways? attack runs? avoiding AA? air to air engagement?
first things first, press C to get rid of the cockpit and improve your view. I dont fly using the outside view, its to hard to judge the small adjustments needed.

Re: Why are helicopters so hard to fly?
Yea, second view is the best, I personally can't do anything, not even hover in 3rd person view. Without my gauges I'm just lost. As for flying, take it slow. Start off just lifting off, hovering, and landing. Then start to do things like flying forwards, and sideways, just don't go to far forwards, keep it pretty steady while you learn.

Re: Why are helicopters so hard to fly?
I'll tell you my set-up and you can either try it or ignore it.
I use 3rd person for transport choppers and nose cam for attack choppers.
Up/Down arrow keys = throttle
Left/Right arrow keys = yaw
W/S = pitch
A/D = roll
Spacebar = rockets
Num 0 = flares
I've used this setup since 42 and it works for me. I never could use a joystick to fly the choppers, I always overcorrect and flip.|TG-33rd|Dark_Viper

Re: Why are helicopters so hard to fly?
Something you might want to try is just using mouse and keyboard and switching the roll to a/d keys and the yaw to the mouse. I fly with that config and it helped me a lot. It gives you a lot more control over rolling so you aren't always diving towards the ground upside down.
