Re: How to know when to drop bombs?
I personally couldn't figure out bombing for the longest time, infact some of you might remember the time when i was chinese flying a mig and attempting to bomb the enemy... and i got over 50 teamkill points.... So i was good at bombing... just not the enemy.
But then one day, i said to myself, i'm gona play Operation Clean Sweep on singleplayer, and guess what?! It has jets! Bombers actually, i practice on it all the time now. I have gotten bombing down to an exact science, with bombing runs at 150 Alt fullspeed over targets with direct hits and kills. Times like that i feel like a friggen B-52.
But this time only, for the low price of 4 payments of 19.99 you will get my trademarked system!
Just kidding, use the bombing swing arm thingymajig. The thing that looks like a

Its verticle, but you get the point. Your bombs land where the top line intersects the curve at the bottom. Or just around that area. No guesswork at all needed, ever. Bombing now is one of the easiest things ever.

I disagree with Kaine completely, FWIW. The HUD means nothing, as explained in my earlier post.

Re: How to know when to drop bombs?
It might mean something at a specific altitude and dive angle, but I agree with your sentiment that it's generally worthless and you have to rely on experience/intuition.

Generally experience and intuition is best, but those lines definatly do help if you understand the science of it. This kinda thing holds true of a lot of things in the game. Sniper rifle has a similar kind of crosshair, and at a distance you have to use different lines. Same thing with the tank. These are usually worthless because you dont know distance. In a jet however, you know altitude which can make the lines useable if you know how it works. I, personally, dont know how it works and just go by intuition and it works fine for me.
