Re: Shadow Squad Leaders
I think EA will have to modify the game when the CO splits a squad up in two immediatly the SL can choose who he wasnt his sergent to be and think it will be cooler that you can spawn on the sergent or SL. BTW the SL still calls the shots with the CO, Sgt calls the the nitty gritty things

Re: Shadow Squad Leaders
it just came to mind but i was just playing and i noticed that people join a squad and then never do anything as a team. I was SL and im calling my team t o spawn on me and instead i see them doign kamikazee style trips to all the bases. eventhough i was #1 with 75 pts my squad was the worst cuz their negative score out weighed mine

Re: Shadow Squad Leaders
Lol its a good concept Beat, I know I actively try to determine and destroy the sqaud leader in any engagement.. and when you've played on these servers for a few months you get a good idea of those squad leaders that are always playing as SLs.

Re: Shadow Squad Leaders
Please read the SOP's as there is a procedure for kicking people not following SL's orders.. alternatively you should try to inform them over VOIP what they are doing and if they don't respond, kick them from your squad.. the server will boot them when they try to respawn.

Re: Shadow Squad Leaders
Replace Bom's first statement with ".....I am down..." and that's about right.

Well why take one bad example and generalize? What about mods like Forgotten Hope, Desert Combat? They not only united people, they caused more players who werent playing BF1942 to join the community.

Forgotten Hope, as good as it is/was/will be never caught on here, and Desert Combat had....about 12 active players.
SWAT4? Never really caught on here.
Operation Flashpoint? Apophis is going to try to get it restarted for the 3rd time.
All I'm advocating is being realistic about realism.

Re: Shadow Squad Leaders
Have any of you known SLs though of taking on protoges(sp?) I mean let someone else who wants to be SL do it, even if they're not as good at it as you. Follow their orders (even when you think they're wrong) and then help them through the mistakes after the fact. I think the problem would correct itself if you had more known SLs. I wouldn't think this would have an adverse affect on game quality unless one team was all known good SLs and the other was all trainees.
The only problem I would see is a lack of people wanting to be SL. Some people like being a grunt and being told what to do. But I would wager there are enough people who would be more likely to step up if they knew they were going to have a vet there to answer questions or lend advice. Some people are just natural leaders, the rest of us have to be taught and work at.

Re: Shadow Squad Leaders
the best way to learn how to squad lead is to be a grunt in every one of the squad leaders squads thats been mentioned here. Ive learned various things from each squad leader and kinda put it all together to form my own style of squad leading. Thats the best way to really learn, just watch them. If more people watched them, more people would squad lead and wed eventually get confused with who the enemy's squad leader is.

Probably why BF2 is so popular....it's about as unrealistic as a tactical shooter can get.

Re: Shadow Squad Leaders
lol Bom I like the Squad Leader Squad idea. Have everyone attack from different directions and cause mass panic.

Yeah the radioman concept is more what I was thinking. I agree that it should be for the whole round, or at the very least NOT switching back after you've switched. Perry that same game of my squad charging the TV tower is what got me thinking about it. Even though I stayed well hidden for most of the time, once I got spotted it was all over for us, despite having an outstanding medic on my squad that game.
The obvious tradeoff though is giving up direct communication with the CO and losing the ability to mark waypoints, and the extra communication required within the squad. And having to point out who the real SL is to the commander.
And it's not like anyone would know the difference if I started dying in Attack zones all the time.
As for the SL training idea and having a protoge lead - I for one still get a little nervous if I have another good SL on my squad. And the thought of me trying to direct Tarpan or Bom with my relatively limited repetoire of tactics (the vast majority of which I learned playing in their squads when I first got here) is a little scary.
Santa hit the nail on the head - play a lot with good SLs, find your own style and don't be afraid to assign people tasks. After that it's all building experience and seeing what works and what doesn't.

I like how I managed to survive the mess somehow, heh.

As far as the mod topic is concerned, right here is one person you'd lose if the server went to a mod version. The only mod I've ever played was CS, and that is arguably not even a mod anymore. I'm not a big fan of playing a separate game than what I bought. I do my best to stick to the stock game whenever possible.
