It would take some work to get your medics accurate when throwing out med bags, but they still heal without them and on a quick resupply of an embattled squad, they'd be a huge help. I would definitely love to try this out, it could be a faster, more accurate supply crate.

As for the squad evac, sometimes it's simply too hot to pick a squad up. People see a blackhawk and immedietly start to fire on it, even if you come down fast and never touch the ground you have to allow for a few seconds to get everyone in, and if you try to rotate and give your gunners a shot on the enemy you risk teamkills. It's plausible, but I think you would need direct TS channel between SL and Pilot, and coordination by commander. I'm guessing the commands could go like this:
I agree...I really like the idea of a gunship providing suppression fire with a medic in the back dropping packs...and switch between the support and the medic..dropping supplies..could prove highly effective in a 64 player game.

    Re: Helo Evac Squad

Having the AH in the same squad and using it as an escort is an interesting idea, but again there's the basic problem of communication. I've tried using a transport squad before (that is to say, my squad was the ground squad that was getting a lift) and there was just no good way to tell the pilot where we wanted transporting to. In the end he got us approximately where we needed to be, but it wasn't anywhere near as effective as having the pilot be in the squad.

Maybe if you could set up a TS system similar to StrikeFear's air strike protocol it might work, but otherwise I still think it would be too tricky to work out the details. If you want an AH escort for a transport chopper I think the best thing to do is just ask the commander for one.

I've actually flown a few maps as a locked 1-2 man squad using the Blackhawk as a transport helo. There are three problems with it: coordination, squad size, and attitude.

Coordination: You need a CO that understands your purpose, and can coordinate the moves between you and another squad. Don't even bother trying to be a transport without this.

Squad size: The squad should only be as large as can comfortably fit in the chopper. Leaving a man behind tends to cause problems.

Attitude: "Why let someone fly us when we can walk/drive ourselves?" or "It's a gunship, not a transport!" These present problems.

I'm a fair Blackhawk pilot, and I love the idea of moving a squad around for insertion/extraction. Unfortunately, the way the game is played doesn't lend a whole lot of success for that technique, as it tends to be too slow.

    I have a simple solution.
You fly to the squad that needs a pick up. Then switch seats and sit in the back. Let the squad leader fly and once the squad is at its destination, switch to the driving position again.
If you don't get orders on where you're needed, just land at crowded areas at random.

As a commander i have noticed that troop mobility is extremely important. When I issue a squad to attack, it on average takes a minute before it arrives. By that time the situation could have changed already.

And when you crash into a tree and everyone dies because the SL can't fly?

Personally, I always pray a little when an untested pilot takes to the air in a full helo, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to always work.
Maybe I need a basin of holy water and a bible near my computer..

a good thing to try would be a BH with 2 support & 2 medics & posibly an engineer. mobile supply drop!! fly in, drop ammo & med packs, fly away.

this could also be done with a buggy. just have dedicated re-supply squad with a medic, support & engineer driving a buggy around supporting squads that are in or out of a fire fight. this works well because of the area healing/resuply/repair effect that the classes have when in a vehicle.
only risk would be team kills if you have an inexperienced driver running over team mates.

I havn't seen this used very much but it's a nice idea. I guess you would need a competant CO to be able to properly make use of it.

    Re: Helo Evac Squad

i got the idea when playing a COOP single player game with a few mates over LAN. all the bots got in vehicles and i was in a tank. i caused a road block so i got repaired from all the engineers in vehicles around me.

(will soon create a thread on how to play a COOP-SP game over LAN)
