Re: Should There Be A Greater Penalty For Dying?
Yes. Would it be possible to get something like this running on our servers sometime soon?

Re: Should There Be A Greater Penalty For Dying?
Not very easily. This would take some map modding to set the maps up properly. I'm not sure if it wouldn't take a full mod either. Not allowing respawn or limited respawn isn't a part of the game design. The only thing close I could think of is to up the respawn time to 60 minutes, but I'm not sure that's possible with the current tools.

Re: Should There Be A Greater Penalty For Dying?
I just read through this thread. Lots of good ideas, but it seems like they're all focused on changing an existing game that has a defined and established style (not to mention a lot of popularity here at TG). Not that it's a bad thing, but with the implementation of these ideas, wouldn't we pretty much end up with another (albeit prettier) Operation Flashpoint? So why not just play OFP instead? It's a game that was developed with realism in mind in the first place, has huge environments, has plenty of vehicles, and is also being hosted here at TG once again. It's all ready to go!

Re: Should There Be A Greater Penalty For Dying?
Comments like "the game was meant to be played this way"... or "the game won't be as fun" are all subjective comments that we won't know the answer to. Some players will like the arcade feel and others would rather see a slower paced game. It's a preference.
As to the spawn timer, in the past (i.e. BF1942) we've increased the spawn time to help make players value their life. We saw less suicide tactics, solo missions, rambos, etc. Players tended to wait on their teammates, talk about what they were going to do, etc.
I believe that increasing the spawn time would help out in a similar way, but I don't think the spawn timer alone can do it. With the increase spawn time, I believe you would need an increased arty reload time and an increased vehicle spawn time.
For example, if player respawn was 60 seconds, vehicle respawn was 180 seconds and arty reload was 300 seconds should provide a decent balance and still promote infantry play. I would probably set the critical timer to 30 seconds (or half the player spawn time).
I do agree that when you're dead waiting that you should be able to rotate your team members and continue chatting so that players don't go nuts waiting.
I believe the settings above would provide a fairly balanced game... except of course for the bombers. Without effective AA in the game, the bombers are going to be hell, regardless of spawn time. So let's for the moment pretend that either a) we have effective AA or b) there are no aircraft. Does that provide a desireable game?

Many of these things are just settings within the server or map and are configurable. I wouldn't say that you're creating a new game, just working within the parameters of the existing.

Sounds similar to what I've been promoting.

Also I think all bomber jets should be replaced with fighter jets. The bomber jets are simply way too powerful.
And another idea I just started kicking around recently is doubling (or 3x or 4x?) the time it takes to turn a flag. This would make a squad really prove that they control the area before they can turn the flag.
