Re: SL Advice / Training?
Thanks for all the help. For those wondering why the original post is now only two sentences long and contains little to no information, one of the moderators of this board made a tiny mistake (which happens).
I'm impressed that you guys didn't just link me to the other tutorials (which my original post mentioned I already read), but actually gave me decent tips and hints and advice that I will most definitely use.
Thanks a ton, this community just got so much cooler in my eyes,
~Salad

Re: SL Advice / Training?
very welcome. I spotted a squad called NEW SL last night, but didn't get chance to check out who was in it. Whoever it was - I hope things worked out well for you

Re: SL Advice / Training?
I like assault and support as SL kits. Body armor is really useful. Support, I think is the best, because it encourages me to not be agressive, and it means I can load up the rest of the squad with more offensive kits.
Some people like medic as SL, but in my experience it's just not as reliable as having a seperate medic who can keep everybody else alive too. The problem is it can be very hard trying to find a downed SL if you're not a medic.

1. Use a mic.
2. Keep your squad together.
3. Don't keep attacking a base if you see it's not working.

"A man's gotta know his limitations." - Dirty Harry, in Magnum Force
A sign of a good leader is that he doesn't assume he knows everything, but depends on those around him. Let your squad know that you're a resource, not just a conduit for orders from the Old Man. You're the guy with the ability to call for supplies, a UAV, and arty, so let them know you're open to passing along requests.
If you're "leading" experienced SL's, it might make sense to temporarily resign from a squad while dead to pass the baton and respawn on your 2nd, who's now the new SL.

Thanks for the heads-up. Respawning itself is unrealistic, so it didn't seem a leap to leverage it.

Re: SL Advice / Training?
As far as kits go for a squad leader, it should be whatever kit your best at. If you stay alive and can kick butt with a kit, you should be that kit as you will be able to live longer. I personally almost always pick assault because of the body armor and the gun. Occasionally i pick spec ops because im also pretty good with it, even though it doesnt have armor which is a big drawback.
Also, as wulfyn pointed out, there are varying styles of squad leaders. Theres the defensive kind (wulfyn) that stays a bit out of the battle and trys to help from a distance. This tends to develop organized waves of attacks by the squad members coming in from a distance. I dont know much about this kind of squad leading though.
Then theres the aggresive kind (me, bommando, beatnik) that get in the thick of the action (though its never good to be completely in the action and right up on the flag, as you will probably get C4ed, grenaded, or surrounded). This kind of squad leading generally tends to be very threatening to the defense because you are spawning right up at their defensive line and thus cause confusion, but the drawback is that the attack is for a shorter time because the SL usually dies quicker.
Its really just all about preference and trying both out to see what makes your squads most effecient.

Re: SL Advice / Training?
Yeah being too aggressive is still my biggest weakness, IMO. I just charge in first more often than not, which can result in my squads doing more jogging than necessary on sustained assaults. I'd say as a new squad leader pick a kit with good armor (Assault or Support) and hang back, spotting enemies and directing their action.
Oh, and have a good medic stick to you like glue.

Beat, you have no weaknesses. You're like some robotic-superhuman-lizard-man-power-SL.

Re: SL Advice / Training?
Played a bit of SL recently, thanks to help from all of you. I decided to be different, and instead of picking one of the kits mentioned, I'd pick something nobody mentioned at all (good or bad). That's right, I went sniper.
I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned. I was told that I wasn't doing a bad job at all. I would stay back and provide a spawn point, while being able to spot enemies that are trying to sneak around us, and even pick off a good few, or knock their health down a bit to make them easy killing. Not to mention when my entire squad is dead and they're trying to figure out where I am, they've walked right past me numerous times. That ghillie really comes in useful if you know where to hide,
Again, thanks to all of you for your tips, and see you in game!

Re: SL Advice / Training?
Good to hear, SaladFork. Playing sniper does force you to stay back and stay safe, so it can be good for SL. I've heard of other SLs using the sniper kit, but not too much. To me, if you're staying back, not dying, and pointing out enemy locations, you're accomplishing a majority of your SL role. Plus, most squad members are always happy when the SL can keep the mobile spawn going, especially on the attack. It makes their job much easier, and they don't have to slog across the map all the time. Anyway, glad you had a good time and made a success of it!

Re: SL Advice / Training?
The one thing that I *think* stands out with me, as compared to other SL's, is the use of your on-screen waypoint icons as a tool to focus your squads attention! I use the move/attack/defend icons to focus my squads attention on an area of the map that I wish to, well...
move, attack, or defend...
It sounds as self explanatory as it really is!
Here's a few examples:
-I've got orders to move west. *use on-screen move icon* That's our waypoint. Let's move...
-I've got a squad on the ridge to the east! *use on-screen attack icon* I marked their position on the map, keep your eyes on the sword...
-I've got orders to defend this position *use on-screen defend icon* That's our flag, dig in, find a good defensive position, and watch for incoming artillery!
You can use your comm rose, and/or the map to use your command icons! Use 'em both!

Re: SL Advice / Training?
Also remember to use your commander to find snipers. If the commander can light them up, you have a hope of cleaning them out.
