I am surprised this isn't done more often. Organized armored columns with engineers. . .

These formations are very effective WHEN THE TANKS KEEP MOVING. just like patton's 3rd army. . .

tanks are meant to slash and move, cover huge amounts of open ground and punch holes through enemy forces. If you sit still, you're DEAD.

I was on Karkand once and we kept rolling the APC and Tank from the gas station. I forget who was with me, but we both went engineer and we kept rolling. . .all the way past the square to the market place, then we would circle back and do it again. I think 50% of OPFOR was going AT trying to hit us, enabling our other squads to blow them to pieces in close combat. We got hit a lot, but never twice. . .we stayed close and repaired on the move.

Its a beautiful thing. I am always suprised on Karkand when there isn't an ARMOR squad for the US side.

I don't like it if people overuse this sort of tactic. I feel it goes against my personal rule of keeping the game enjoyable for both teams. However if you have two skilled AT's they can take one tank down pretty fast (2 or three shots). So good teamwork should be able to beat this strat quite easily, unless these players are genius tankers, which they might well be.

It's a pity they made enemy vehicles driveable. Now i suppose an American could drive a Middle Eastern jeep (if they can drive with a manual gear that is). But i doubt the same could be said about the tanks, and even less so for planes/choppers.
Lmao imagine an iraqi carjacking an abrams tank, or better a chopper.

I've never played previous bf editions, and i know this is typical for battlefield. I also think it's really rediculous and tedious. Jeep races to tank, steals it by teleporting into the tank, rapes squad around tank... tedious. Maybe an idea for the mod you guys are making.

It's not like vehicle stealing is an epidemic or something. It's really easy to stop an enemy from taking your vehicles, since you spawn right there and they have to walk across the battlefield undefended.

    BigGaayAl -

"(if they can drive with a manual gear that is)" - come on man, you know we're too stupid to figure out a gear shift. . . .

as for the "enjoyable" thing, I wouldn't worry about that too much. TG servers are full of good, intelligent fighters. Once this tactic evolves, someone will come up with a way to defeat it (a couple of land mines on Karkand would have stopped my rolling thunder that night).

aaaaaand as for the reality thing . . .I agree. Its bothered me for a long long time that an engineer can repair foreign vehicles using the same toolsets they were given for their own vehicles!!!!!!!!! Man! It ruins the whole damn thing for me.

    I kid, I kid.

I don't think rolling armor with engineers is an exploit.

another good one is the above "tank on tank" action, but with a twist. I've seen two squad leaders do the above in tanks (*cutting off the passageway*), and then I pulled up behind them in a jeep -- I was support. They repaired anything near them, and I resupplied anything around me... we lasted a good 15 minutes or so before they finally sent an arty barrage at us...

Already done. In Tactical Mod all armor and aircraft are locked to the specified teams.

    Re: Armor repairing armor

I think part of the reason you don't see armor columns is because it's a logistical nightmare. Vehicles have to be rallied from all across the map. Then you may loose a flag so your tank driver spawns somewhere else and then that flag gets retaken and you end up with an idle tank (read: stolen & used to retake the flag).

The main reason is that large groups of vehicles get torn to pieces by aircraft since there's very little cover large enough to house vehicles (if at all on some maps) and AA is ineffective.

yer theres only a few maps where convoys work well... Mashuur being one of them as therees no valid air coverage...

a convoy is dead meat on maps like operation clean sweep...

Karkand is MADE for the armored column. . .all US armor spawns at the station and there's no air power. problem is the confined streets make for land mine/C4 hell.

Well, next time I'm US in Karkand, i'll set up the armor squad and roll engineer. Look for it if your down.

I think I may have been squad leading the MEC side in that game (There weren't many people on because it was earlier in the day). I always felt like it was just me and one or two other guys trying to kill you. When I tell them to all go AT or Spec Ops, but only one or two do (and one of them runs out in the open and gets shot instanly) it's very hard to take down armour. Good job on your part though. I'll just have to try a C4/Mine trap next time instead of AT.
