I keep it short and sweet and INFREQUENT. Some autonomy is good, but if a CO has 6 squads to administer, try to give the guy a break.
The top-down commanding is only one way to play as a commander. There are folks, myself included, that prefer the bottom-up commanding. I prefer to use the command chair to support my squad leaders and have them take the initiative on the battlefield. Remember, the commander does not know everything. Communication is the key.

I was COing today on Sharqi which really isn't my strength but the round just imploded because a few squads wouldn't stick to their tasks. There were a lot of things that went wrong but the momentum of the round was pretty much the same.

One squad would abandon their task to fix something that wasn't their problem. For example a squad decided that they should help defend the flag they were spawning at instead of attacking despite it already being defended. That means I had to spend another squad on attack instead of defense and that gave us one over-defended flag and one undefended flag. They weren't disobeying orders but they weren't doing what they were supposed to either. So the plan didn't work and I couldn't get enough order out of the squads to start something effective. It's that kind of second guessing that really makes it hard to control the Squad Leaders on TG.

Arf, this is a great example of a lack of personal discipline. I encounter teh same thing as a SL regularly. The flag we spawn at, say, is under fire but I need the squad to be somewhere else. I get frustrated if I have to tell my squad guys to disengage and rally on me more than a couple times. Often it seems like I am rushing ahead, but generally this is because guys in my squad are not following orders but trying to deal with something that just isn't their problem. It's especially worse when you are sat in a vehicle waiting for a guy to get his arse in gear and jump in.

There's a balance to strike though--- the SL does have boots on the ground and eyes on the target but the CO has a much better perspective for the entire feild of battle.

The 2 roles should be complementary and, at risk of sounding like some sort of corporate tool, the Sls and the CO need to maintain a regular dialog and ensure that the Squads' tactical and operational decisions are inline with the operational and strategic goals and capabilities of the CO and vice versa.
