The problem is obviously deeper than what the first post suggests. If it works for some people and not others it must mean that there is more to it.

Re: How to give handshaking the finger.

I tried the instructions in the OP - no joy. I'm going to try it again later.

Another way around the issue is to join a different server, bail out of the load at about 10% or so (I don't think there's a magic number, just quit loading to that server earlier enough so you don't have to wait forever to unload) and then join the server you want to play on. No worries. Problem with this is that you need to do it every time you want to connect to a server.

the fix seems to work, at least so far. what i did before was to go to pb folder in bf2 and dblclick PnkBstrB.exe before i started pr. i had to do this EVERY time i played, but it seemed to work.

I'll try the other solution. I sent a query to evenbalance, but I'm not expecting anything more than token advice like update your drivers.

I only seem to have problems every 10 or so times I try to join up. Seems totally random to me. There for awhile I was dumping the PB directory every time before playing as a matter of course.

Re: How to give handshaking the finger.

Anyone ever look at these logs on their machine ?:

(FAQ for the Punkbuster A&B services)

«How will I know if these new components are operating properly?

The new service components are designed to log to the system LogFiles folder. On most systems, this is at c:\windows\system32\LogFiles. The new components create and use a LogFiles subfolder called PunkBuster for logging messages. Under normal working conditions, the only messages you will see in the logs are initialization success messages. The new components automatically clear their respective logs after they reach about 100KB in size. »

They might provide more information on the nature of the problem ?

Re: How to give handshaking the finger.

Alright for the hand shake error I got it and fixed it simply by:

    deleting the old PB folder(Program Files/EA GAMES/Battlefield 2/pb)

Then downloading this http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php (matters if your running on Windows/Linux/Mac)

Running that program and then simply choosing Battlefield 2 from that list and clicking check for updates and download newest patches.

All credit goes to some poster in the PR mod help/support forums (couldnt find it again : \), Had the same problems and looked for awhile in the PR forums, found it and did it prepared to do that other 28 step fix, thankfully this solved it for me..

I listened to people getting dropped, having MD5 and Handshaking issues.. and stupidly said outloud... "I havnt had any problems with v0.8"

I kid you not 10 seconds later.. I dropped, and today Im getting the handshake connection error...

I tried that whole ordeal and the problem still persists. I don't think this is a problem that can be resolved by reinstalling, eventually it always comes back. Like herpes.

Yea came back for me too. The load any server to 10% then join your game trick works 100% of the time though.

The weird part about this is before I formatted and put XP Pro on my system I had no punkbuster problems. Now I can't go two days without PB problems... I'm at a loss on this one, it makes no sense really.
