Re: Crash when loading some maps

I have had no problems with Vista 64-bit. I have 6 GB of DDR3 at 1600MHz and 6 GB of hard drive space as virtual memory. With the cracked BF2.exe, I can run every setting at high including textures and shaders. I even force 16x AA and 16x AF in the Nvidia control panel.

It may be a due to your amount of memory as the game will swap files from the hard drive (think statics like trees) when trying to load the map. The more times it has to go to the hard drive, the more likely it is of getting a CTD.

But, then again, it may be something else and totally unrelated from a memory issue....

I don't remember exactly, but I think it's associated with the memory leaks in BF2. If you're running DDR3@1600, you shouldn't be having issues, but I think for slower RAM (like mine) it caps out at some point and CTDs itself because it's taking up too much (in the 2-gig area) of your RAM, even if you have 4 or 6 gigs.

Turn your textures to medium and you should be fine that's what I did.

I can't get to it here on my phone. Gonna have to wait till I get home to send it to you.

It's just a patch or file that let's pr use more ram or something. I have not crashed loading or otherwise since.

Re: Crash when loading some maps

Here is the patched BF2.exe which basically allows BF2 to use more than 2 GBs of RAM. It should fix the memory leak/CTD problems for most...

    patched BF2.exe

Q: I am crashing to desktop when loading/changing levels.
Q: I am getting a lot of lag on levels.

A: The most common cause of this is that you are running out of memory (though there are other causes). BF2 was a memory intensive game, and PR only increases on that.

First, you can try lowering your video settings, in particular, Textures. If that doesn't help or fix your issue, you can try increasing your virtual memory.

If that STILL doesn't work, you can try patching your bf2.exe to allow it to use more than 2GB of memory. This is only useful if you indeed do have more than 2GB of memory. Firstly, you want to backup your current bf2.exe in your "C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2" (default install location) folder. To do this, simply rename it from bf2.exe to bf2.exe.original. You should back it up incase you have any issues in the future. Now you need to download the patched bf2.exe. This can be found in THIS zip file (THIS one if your using the EA Downloader version) (If you get a virus warning, ignore it, just a false positive). Then simply extract it next to bf2.exe.original, and your good to go.

yea the altered exe file didn't really help with crashing for me, although it did help with loading times I believe. What did it for me was reducing to either medium textures or shaders. I don't CTD anymore.

If the .exe AND changing video settings doesnt fix it....backup your pr profiles folder and reinstall the mod ONLY...no need to reinstall BF2, just PR. Ive had to do this twice to fix above posted load crashes, it was the only cure.

    Re: PR Technical Problems Thread

I don't crash but running it on my laptop makes the game freeze after some time playing. I began to think it was overheating problems, but I'm not sure it is now.

Tried to use that BF2 fixer and I didn't crash, but I lagged like hell on Muttrah like I never did before... I run Vista and I have 4gb RAM... Maybe expand my virtual memory? I don't know.

Mods, could this be either stickied or just merged with another post (such as the FAQ or something of the sort)? Thanks... delete this message if you decide not to.

There seems to be a lot of people having some crash-to-desktop issues suddenly. This MAY fix the problem if your problem fits this criteria in both XP and Vista. It also has had the effect of making me not get kicked by punkbuster as much... but I don't know if thats mere happenstance or if its an improvement by dumping EADM:

    * You are using the EA Download Manager
    * You ran in windowed mode and got no errors
    * You have tried the smaller texture settings, which did nothing

The issue seems to be with the EA Download Manager, which is required to play the virtual version from the EA Store. The ONLY difference between the downloaded version and the CD/DVD version is the BF2.exe which is found at C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe

Now, since most people probably do not have a CD version of the game sitting around, we need to do two things:

    1. Replace the BF2.exe with the CD version
    2. Since you don't own a CD, we need to spoof the CD check

For step one, you need to:

    1. Download this link
    2. Rename the C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe file to BF2.exe.old
    3. Drag/drop or cut/paste the BF2.exe in the zip file you downloaded into the Battlefield 2 folder (so you just replaced the BF2.exe)

Note that this BF2.exe you downloaded is "large address aware" so it will let BF2 or PR use more than 2GB of RAM. If you have access to a plain old vanilla CD/DVD-based BF2.exe, you can use that instead. However, the one I linked to will help prevent you from running into some memory issues.

Now if you try to start BF2, it'll ask you to put a CD/DVD in. We'll fix that - but it's a little more complicated.

    1. Download Daemon Tools Lite. Google it. Download and install it.
    2. Download a mini disc image for BF2. Try looking here...
    3. Place the mini image into the Battlefield 2 directory (not necessary, but keeps things organized)
    4. Mount the image (located in the Battlefield 2 directory) with Daemon Tools

(To mount the image in daemon tools, right click the daemon tools icon on the tasktray and select mount image and browse to the image you put in the Battlefield 2 directory)

Now when you launch Battlefield 2 or Project Reality, it will not ask for a CD/DVD, because it "sees" one in the virtual CD drive that Daemon Tools installed.

Hopefully this will fix your problem. If not, then uninstall Daemon Tools, delete the disc image, delete BF2.exe and rename BF2.exe.old back to BF2.exe and best of luck finding another fix!

If you have any questions, reply here. If its questions regarding Daemon Tools, then you can also Google the subject for a better answer. I'll try to host a version of the mini disc image and give you an easy way to get to it.
