Re: My lag sucks
Have you considered DSL? Though the througput is lower, latency is usually better and more stable. The biggest problem with cable modem is the shared media causing high latency.
Right now a lot of DSL companies are lowering prices and doing free trials. I've considered trying Verizon for free to just see how the performance is.

Re: My lag sucks
I submitted an email ticket last night, and got the standard canned reply.. Make sure I have enough RAM, empty my cache (how this affects gaming, which is the only thing I mentioned, is beyond me), yadda yadda. They asked me a bunch more questions as part of the standard reply, so I answered em and showed em my little graph and all.
The guy I mentioned in my 2nd post in this thread had the Comcast truck come out and the tech ended up replacing something outside the house. The guy wasn't sure what, but he said his problem has gone away. Coincidence or not, who knows.. Sure is odd that they did upgrades during wee hours on the 6th, and I start having problems on the evening of the 6th.
Thing about having a truck come out is that I don't seem to have problems during the day.. only at night when the oversubscription would really come in to play.. and they don't make appointments after 5pm.
I'm too far from the CO for DSL.. over 20,000 feet. Don't have a land line anyways.

Re: My lag sucks
I've been on the phone with comcast about 5 times over the last month. I've had my modem replaced twice, but since the tech's only come out in off-peak hours I'm struggling to prove my case.
Any tools that you guys suggest I use to gather more data for them?|TG-12th| SHINER

Re: My lag sucks
Yeah I'm on Roadrunner. When I posted in response to you, I had just gotten off a server and had a lot of connection problems. I grabbed that program and ran it, and by coincidence (or not?) there was a huge spike at the dallas datacenter. I also noted a red box saying packet loss was at about 12%. Not sure how bad that is (relative to normal packet loss), but it sounds bad. This was at about 2:30 am CST as well, so high neighbor traffic most likely wasn't a factor. Persistent connection problems seem to affect my play about 20% of the time, mostly in prime time. I may try to call RR today just to see if there's any resolution possible...

Re: My lag sucks
ALL packetloss is BAD. Packets are not supposed to go missing. NORMAL packetloss is 0%. You will get temporary loss if someone has a link failure somewhere, but if you consistently see packetloss above 1%, it means a router somewhere can't handle the load and should be fixed.

Re: My lag sucks
Tonight is even worse! So I called Comcast.. The guy that helped me was actually helpful... well, as much as he can be without actually being here to fix the problem. He said, "Wow, these signal levels are terrible, I'm surprised you were even able to send email out!" Hehehe.. they've been that way for years. Gots me a truck coming out Thursday between 10 and 2 -- what a lousy time frame -- but hopefully they'll find the problem.
Maybe I'll go rubberband around for a bit..
Heh, maybe not! Here is tonight's graph. Note the packetloss all along the way.. I couldn't even sit in a mobile AA without it jerking around on me
Guess I'll just go to the Arcade thingie and throw penguins around.

Re: My lag sucks
Comcast dude was here for about 20 minutes.. "Yep, your connection is shot. It's a problem outside so I'm going to have to send out a line tech later today." He used his little tester to ping yahoo and said it was just fine, but I showed him that 2nd graph which made my problem quite clear. Hopefully that line-tech fixes whatever problem there is and gets me back to knifing

Re: My lag sucks
Good to hear you've made progress. I think I upset the lag gods yesterday and got to feel some of your pain last night. To all of the people who met me in face-to-face combat on Daqing last night - no, I don't normally stand in front of people and let them kill me, nor do I turn the tank turret and shoot the wall beside me instead of the tank in front of me. That was a brutal game.

Re: My lag sucks
I guess the line-tech came out, but I'm not sure.. No knock at my door and no note and the signal levels didn't change.. but....

Re: My lag sucks
Yeah I just got off with RR here in Austin. They said the transmission level on my line (either due to the modem or just the line itself) is way high. Being the networking expert that I am, I of course had no idea what he was talking about.
He likened it to shouting and losing some of the signal quality, so we'll see.
Got a guy coming out Monday to fix it up proper.

Re: My lag sucks
Quick follow-up... The RoadRunner guy came out this week and tweaked my signal however cable guys tweak signals. He also noticed that my cable modem was 3 generations (six years) old (!). He recommended taking it to their office and exchanging it. I did that today and the difference is amazing - even while on the internet. Pages load a LOT faster. So if anyone has and connection issues with a cable ISP, and the modem is bigger than 2 packs of cards, get a newer cable modem.

Re: My lag sucks
Haha, nice. I got a new modem over the summer after mine just powered off one day and refused to power back on. That size describes it about perfectly.

Re: My lag sucks
Just wondering if you've had any problems since the 13th?
